Adele and Gotye remain untouched on the ARIA Charts despite ten top 40 debuts

Reaching an epic twenty weeks at the ARIA Album Chart pinnacle this week is Adele’s ground-breaking album 21, which joins Shania Twain’s 1999 record “Come On Over” as the fourth longest-running chart-topper in ARIA Chart history! Only Brothers In Arms from Dire Straits, Innocent Eyes from Delta Goodrem and Jack Farnham’s Whispering Jack have eclipsed this mammoth achievement since the ARIA Charts began in 1983.

The ARIA Singles Chart sees Gotye’s “Somebody That I Used To Know” featuring Kimbra hold at the peak for the eighth consecutive week, to become the longest-running Australian chart-topper since Savage Garden’s 1997 hit “Truly Madly Deeply”, which also chalked up eight weeks at the top. “Eagle Rock” from Daddy Cool was the last Australian single to achieve a greater run at the top, occurring back in 1971.

With ten albums claiming top 40 debuts this week, five of which grace the top 10, this week’s ARIA Album Chart is well and truly moving and shaking. American punk-rock outfit Blink 182 is the top of the pack, scoring a No.2 debut with Neighborhoods, and giving the band their sixth straight top 10 album since 2000 to equal the peak achieved by their best-charting record, Take Off Your Pants And Jacket. Tony Bennett eclipses his previous ARIA Album Chart achievements this week with the anticipated Duets II, which enters in third position and features performances with Lady Gaga and Amy Winehouse among others. This record comes a full sixty years after Tony first topped the Australian singles chart in December 1951 with the hits “Because Of You” and “Cold, Cold Heart”, with the 85 year-old crooner previously peaking at No.11 in 1995 with his Unplugged album.

The reissue of Nirvana’s breakthrough 1992 record Nevermind coincides with the 20th anniversary of the original release, and sees the landmark album this week round out the ARIA Album Chart top 5. Nevermind claims its sixteenth week in the top 10, originally peaking at No.2 in January/February 1992. British rockers Kasabian continue on an upward trajectory, as their third studio album Velociraptor! claims an impressive No.8 debut. Empire, the band’s 2007 release, peaked at No.67 while the most recent album West Ryder Pauper Lunatic Asylum topped out at No.11 in 2009. Rounding out the ARIA Album Chart top 10 this week is Unto The Locust from Machine Head, the fifth top 50 release for the band and their highest-charting album to date. Machine Head’s “The Blackening” peaked at No.14 in April 2007. Further top 40 debuts this week come from Jason Derulo with Future History at No.11, Alice Cooper’s Welcome 2 My Nightmare at No.16, The Hunter from Mastodon at No.18, along with Demi Lovato’s Unbroken, Kasey Chamber’s Storybook and The Whole Love from Wilco at No. 20, 21 and 23 respectively. A noteworthy mention goes to Pink Floyd, as their 1973 record Dark Side Of The Moon revisits the top 40 in 22nd position; The album originally peaked at No.2 in its year of release.

In ARIA Singles Chart news, Maroon 5’s “Moves Like Jagger” featuring Christina Aguilera remains in second position for the tenth consecutive week. Rihanna enters at No.3 with “We Found Love” featuring Calvin Harris, becoming the second-highest debuting single of 2011 behind Lady Gaga’s No.1 debuting “Born This Way”. Racing from No.9 to 4 is “Stereo Hearts” from Gym Class Heroes featuring Adam Levine, giving the band their first ever Australian top 5 hit. “Mr. Know It All” from Kelly Clarkson blasts sixteen spots up the chart into 12th position, with LMFAO<.b>’s “Sexy And I Know It” just behind at No.13 after shooting up a huge twenty-three places this week. “Pumped Up Kicks” from Californian indie-rockers Foster The People continues to make an impression, climbing six spots to No.19, as Flo Rida’s “Good Feeling” enters at No.22.
