Single Stream: Silversun Pickups "Bloody Mary (Nerve Endings)" (2012)

A strange, unfamiliar synthesised sound, almost shoegaze-like, beckons at the beginning of the new Silversun Pickups single, "Bloody Mary (Nerve Endings)". It is at that moment, conclusions are made that listeners will experience something new from the Los Angeles band in the near future. Their third full-length album, Neck Of The Woods, will be out in Australia on May 4th.

"Bloody Mary" is a slow-burner - it's not an instant hit or a first love. Once it gets going, however, said fire burns bright, revealing a synth-driven groove and an understated yet prominent chorus. Easily one of the best singles of the year thus far. 9/10

One can almost see 'Bloody Mary' hiding in a musty electronic cupboard full of moth eaten memories from childhood; guitars lazily slide into their around-the-house clothes and Brian Aubert casts his voice fondly to the halcyon indie days where thick glasses meant you were merely aping Rivers Cuomo. The electro sheen peels away and it's evident the Silversun Pickups are either hungover, bored or both. Once the fog of nostalgia fades, you're cruelly reminded to wake up and get back to work. 6/10.
