Critic's Corner: Adele - Rolling in the Deep (Jamie XX Remix)

We're back! Today we bring you two reviewers with differing opinions on a recent remix from Jamie of The XX - Adele's "Rolling in the Deep".

You can check out the song HERE.

Corner One: Marc Knevett (Coffs Harbour)

Untouched, "Rolling In The Deep" is a thick, leg kicking country number – exactly what you wouldn’t expect from Adele as the follow up to her ballad heavy debut album 19. So what do you get when Jamie xx (of The xx notoriety) is added to the mix?

By stripping the original instrumentals bare and layering the track with a sparse but varied range of new sounds (from claps to cow-bell), Jamie manages to diversify the songs influences, allowing its overall shape to playfully elude a definitive genre. It’s a refreshing take, and a clever one at that; the instrumentals tend to “pop” in an enticing manner, while Adele’s vocals, confident as ever, command the remaining void with gravitas.

“The scars of your love/they leave me feeling breathless” she sings. So to do the scars of this track, and dare I say it, it’s one finest I’ve heard in a while.

Review Score: 9/10

Corner Two: Arno Billard (Sydney)

Remixes are challenging attempts. They often either turn into massive hits or complete flops. The Black Eyed Peas’ remix ‘The Time’ may serve as an example, but let’s not debate about this one...

Jamie XX (member of The XX) took up the challenge and got out of it pretty well by finely reworking latest single ‘Rolling In The Deep’ from British soul singer Adele.

Unlike the original track - described as a “dark bluesy gospel disco tune” by the songstress herself - Jamie threw in some clubbing housey-dancehall beats and additional vocals from US rapper Childish Gambino. Adele’s vocals are kept pretty untouched and remain on the spotlight, with no over-the-top samplings, which complement the new tune – perhaps with the exception of an unnecessary stadium horn popping out of nowhere half way through the song.

A melodic beating piece that may not suit mainstream radio broadcasting, but will delight the club scene and aural pleasure of its DJs.

Review score: 7.5/10
