NoFX + Bad Religion - Palace Theatre (23.09.09)

On this double head-liner bill, first to play was veterans Bad Religion, whose punk rock anthems had the crowd moving as one giant mass of flannelette and mohawks. Pioneers of that recognisable American punk rock sound, their fast-paced set consisted of “Los Angeles is Burning”, “Them and us”, “Requiem of Decent” and a particular stand out, “I want to conquer the world”. It was bizarre that these 5 older gentlemen were still able to whip the crowd into such a frenzy. Though, what they do isn’t the sort of thing I am particularly into, I could see their performance was of a higher calibre than many of the punk bands coming out of the States today.

Then of course was NoFX, a band I just do not have much time for. Their set consisted of a whole bunch of fart and racist jokes, banter to the extreme, which sort of left their songs to be an unimportant part of the set, which was a bit disappointing, because they performed them with vigour and energy. The more reggae-esque songs were catchy and broke up the monotonous three-chords-three-minutes songs, inciting many a thong, sneaker, cap or shirt to be thrown up at the stage. Like Bad Religion, it’s clear to see the influence they have had on punk rock fans over the last couple of generations, both bands attracting older fans as well as the young, enthusiastic new-comers.
