Laura Imbruglia - The Old Bar (24.11.10)

How do you even begin to cover a Karaoke night? Such was the conundrum at the Old Bar, attending the final show of Laura Imbruglia's November All-Sorts residency. As the title implies, the residency was a deliberate attempt at a mixed bag. Imbruglia had flown solo one night, she had been a little bit country another and, as expected, she'd played with her band. What could the finale be but a round of karaoke? After all - for those unfamiliar with Imbruglia - she is infamously obsessed with karaoke. In fact, you only have to head over to her YouTube channel to learn as much. It was going to crop up sooner or later.

But a return to the matter at hand: how do you begin to write about a karaoke night? It's not as if one may legitimately denounce the slew of honest, unlikely performers that graced the stage. Fortunately enough, there would be no need to stoop to petty critique anyway: even the more electic characters present for the spectacle more than held their own, providing surprisingly accomplished performances. Of course, the night initially suffered from virtually no interest from patrons in belting out the classics (guilty), but Imbruglia's unbridled will to perform and desire to pick the night up from the canvas against the odds encouraged others to create their own spotlight.

Eventually, Imbruglia had curated an admirable crowd for a dreary Wednesday evening. There was everything from Bryan Adams to Celion Dion reverberating throughout the Old Bar, all in good humor of course. That a patron exclaimed following an abrupt silence that he 'forgot the words' despite having them directly screened before him proved perhaps the most bewilderingly amusing thing to occur.

As the night progressed, the more successful the idea of a karaoke night proved. A group of young women stumbled upon the Old Bar and immediately - and loudly - embraced the chance to perform. One had to muse upon the coincidence that Laura should be hosting a karaoke night as her sister's current claim to fame is perhaps little more a glorified version of just that. Bless.

So how do you cover a karaoke night? Well, in a way, you don't. You kick back and enjoy yourself. Whether it were a pitch-perfect superstar in the making on offer, or whether punters' ears were bleeding, Imbruglia's night was sweet and entertaining. Frankly, this sort of finale to her month-long stay at the Old Bar proved a refreshing, novel approach to the idea of a residency. Not only that, Imbruglia delivered the promise of something distinctly new on offer with loving enthusiasm, her self-proclaimed passion for karaoke in full flight. Certainly nothing mindblowing, but an evening of good fun - and surely that's all karaoke should be at the end of the day.
