From what I hear, local act Faguar has been on some shaky ground lately, though has recently found peace as a solo act, just vocals and an electric guitar. With a name like Faguar it is hard to gauge on what one should expect, simplistic guitar songs was probably not on the top of people’s list of guesses. He played a set of bizarrely melancholic pop songs, slowly paced though with this hint of optimism shining through to keep you entertained and watching with curiosity and despite playing at 4.30 in the afternoon, he attracted many inquisitive punters to watch from start to finish.
Then was Sydney’s Kirin J Callinan playing on his lonesome, though performing as a one-man theatre production. He danced around, stomping and punching at a pattern of distortion pedals as he went, creating loops of atmospheric noise. His deep vocals came from nowhere to blanket the venue, adding to his sound-scaped songs, clear but distorted. Kirin also gracefully projects his sense of humour through his songs and banter, singing a number he had just written on a plane a’cappella, claiming he was yet to write the music, and subtly joking about any feud there may be between his home town and Melbourne. He comes across as this looming sort of character, his songs inciting the same, with deep guttural growls and high pitch squawks made between some eccentric dance moves and bashes at his guitar though he had the Workers Club relaxed, but enticed and completely enamoured with his unique and engaging performance.
