Gersey - The Toff in Town (27.02.10)

After a two year hiatus, Melbourne act Gersey are bringing back their gentle indie tunes, and the Toff were chosen to be the first audience to get all nostalgic over the quartet (plus one extra for tonight), as well as have an opportunity to see how smooth the cogs are turning for their return to the road as support for Pavement.

Gersey’s placid songs suited the atmosphere of the Toff perfectly, generous and pretty, swelling in and out. They played slow, lamenting rock and roll songs; the perfect soundtrack to a daydream. They managed to create an ambience which swiftly changed between bare to noisy from tune to tune. Though the bandroom was full, the feeling of a triumphant return was lacking as a great percentage of the audience talked throughout the set, and there was not much acknowledgment of the band’s time spent AWOL. Throughout their hour-long set there were moments I felt things to be a little slow and monotonous, but I was re-invited by the friendly appeal to the band’s performance; the jovial thank you’s and happy banter were engaging.

In all honesty I wasn’t completely taken by the band's songs, this was a matter of personal taste but they played flawlessly - no faults or hiccups - and for older fans that grew up with the band’s music I don’t feel Gersey gave a reason for them to be disappointed. Time has shown that this band like to take things gradually; here is to hoping that the time between albums will prove to be a positive as it has in the past.
