Dent May doesn’t just tour a country. He embraces it. The kitschy self-styled pop showman discovered by Animal Collective no less, played not only a handful of shows in several of our states, but went all out in Australian culture and blogged about it daily, presenting it intertwined with his charm and wit to each of his shows. Dent took to our shores with his companion Bobby Chiz to give us a ukulele driven experience we won’t soon be forgetting.
The spectacled and bearded duo performed their second and final Melbourne show at North Fitzroy venue The Empress. Tiny in capacity, it made for an intimate and thoroughly enjoyable show.
The short and sweet 40 minute set list covered all tracks released on his debut album last February, ‘The Good Feeling Music of Dent May & His Magnificent Ukulele’. With only the back of a tambourine and Bobby’s deceivingly dulcet voice, Dent impressed and impressed with every track he so delicately strummed out. Giving grace to both local Melbourne acts, and his comments on the closure of renowned venue The Tote, only furthered the crowds tender admiration for the geeky and gentle ukuleleist.
Highlights including ‘Love Song 2009’, ‘Howard’, the ever so well received ‘26 Miles (Santa Catalina)’ and of course ‘You Can’t Force a Dance Party’. The only disappointments were the obvious lack of length of the set, but one was definitely left for high hopes for his future works and tours. With the accompaniment of further instrumentation, the possibilities for his future musical development are tantalizing ... but perhaps his charm lies in its simplicity?
