Damn Terran - Pony, Melbourne (27.11.10)

Pony was the appropriate venue of choice for the launch of Damn Terran’s brazen debut ep Pet Hate.

The walls feel as though they are closing in on you as a startling wave of distortion created by the Melbourne trio makes its way to the back of the room and bounces back again. Opening with ’98.1’ was the best introduction the band could have given to their crowd, showering everyone there with what to expect, or unexpect, from their set. They flowed straight through to ‘Man of Your Dreams’; the aggressive rock song echoing similarities of Helmet, assertive and bold.

The ep was a grower, taking a couple of listens before being able to truly appreciate its raw belligerence, though Damn Terran’s live show immediately thrusts it’s witnesses into the deep end, the live incarnations mustering up all the violence they can garner. Another side to this three piece’s songs that shines through further is the pop sensibility that makes itself known on the ep, but quietly lurks in the back ground. Live, it’s the catchy battling it out with the brash.

My personal favourite ‘Crowd Control’ reaffirmed its place as such even further; the lamenting appeal brought the track to its full fruition when performed in the flesh, as well as ‘Death of Me’ and ‘You Need Me’ , both tracks exuding a brassy confidence while inciting that desire in to you just fucking dance!
