Cabins + Mike Noga + Tash Parker - The Retreat Hotel (25.02.10)

cabins-melbourne-band

Opening the quiet Thursday night soiree was solo songstress Tash Parker and her acoustic guitar, playing pretty and delicate stories about her time growing up in the Kimberly. For a number entitled "Understand", Parker was joined by her friend Wally DeBacker, also known as Gotye, to help out with some vocal duties; the pair’s voices melted together. Her songs felt warming; invitations into a window of her life and performed with a heartfelt grace.

He's usually found manning the drum kit for the Drones or fronting his own Gentlemen of Fortune- up next was Mike Noga, this time armed only with his Maton and a bourbon and coke. His performance was strong and nostalgic, with no prissy facade; he bared his all through his songs. Amongst his set was a Nick Lowe cover, but one particular highlight was "All My Friends are Alcoholics", the song itself enough to break your heart but when seen played with such an integrity, it’s hard to tear your eyes away. Noga’s tunes have honesty about them, with a subtle yet captivating brutality in their execution.

Cabins took to the small stage a little drunk and clumsy, but still sounding awe-inspiring as they opened with their signature "Catcher in the Rye". Performing with a curtain of hair over his face, Leroy shuffles and jerks around the stage as if electricity is pulsing through his veins, while his guitar-playing comrade Dan remains relaxed and composed, playing with his eyes shut. The pair’s gravely vocals work together in creating the mystic air to their rock songs. Amongst the set was a cover of Bob Dylan’s own take on the gospel song, "In My Time of Dying", the somewhat bluesy track slotting in between their own flawlessly. Each tune they played had a unique quality that came to life when performed live; "Hounds" felt like a rolling wave of thunder growling along, or my favourite "Foes and Thieves" quietly building up into a violent pop-infused outburst that makes you feel as if your chest will swell and explode from a mix of adrenaline and enthusiasm! There is something incredibly exciting about watching this band perform in the flesh, hearing the songs radiate a room; enchanting, charismatic and exhilarating, with still so many roads to travel to show the world just what they’ve got.
