Bridezilla - Northcote Social Club (20.11.09)

Bridezilla opened their set with ‘Lunar Eclipse’, a slight but commanding beginning to let their presence be known.

The stage was adorned with fairy lights and floral arrangement strewn across their amps, keyboard and drumkit, visually adding to the delicate qualities of the band’s performance. Next was their debut single ‘Beaches’, followed by ‘Queen of Hearts’, a song on the album that just sort of floated past, but live had this captivating pop quality to it that came out in their live performance, much the same appeal exhuming from ‘Soft Porn’, Holiday Sidewinder’s vocals radiating throughout the fairly full venue. When on stage, Bridezilla posses this subtle strength, it’s wise, learned and mature, adding to the intriguing mystique of the band’s live act.

Also performed was ‘Chainwork’ from their first ep, ending in a complete wig-out, Daisy Tulley’s violin becoming increasingly more hectic as the song progressed from this brooding-yet-calm number into a complete musical breakdown, a duel between violin and saxophone and frantic guitar. ‘Magnetic Arrest’ began with a false start though proceeded flawlessly, cementing itself as one of my favourites from their recently released debut The First Dance. The quintet concluded their set with ‘Heart You Hold’ capturing this heart-breaking nature of the song and amplifying it with an elusive vigour. An encore of ‘St Francine’ bought the band back onstage, closing the night with the older track, leaving me completely enamoured and blown away.

Their set was undulating, from light-hearted and blithe it would turn to sombre and erratically passionate, though consistantly engaging and fervent performance I am dying to be witness to again.
