To be honest, I didn’t really have great expectations of tonight, I assumed that it was going to end up a totally snooze fest, with a two hour long over indulgent, boring, nothingness of a set. Well, turns out it was anything but!

Kele walked on and greeted the crowd, in a friendly and warm manner, a god way to start the night off, letting it audience feel that they are playing for them, and only them, with no ‘rock star’ bravado or wankery, before launching into Mercury, loud and enigmatic, a clear anthem for the newer generation of Bloc Party fans, and then straight into Hunting For Witches, causing the room of stirring punters to really dance. Everything was thunderous and full of energy, Kele voice clear and strong, not like I had imagined this night to be at all, with everyone singing along to hits and album track alike. Present on the list of songs played was This Modern Love and newer Trojan Horse, both semi-autobiographical, biting recollections of relationships past. A minute or so into Like Eating Glass, there was a halt and jokes of school yard bash-ups were exchanged between Kele and drummer Matt trying to decide as to what one of them mucked the song up. My favourite for the night was The Prayer, loud and exuberant, with Flux bringing out the crazy raver in us all, with green lasers shot above the audiences head. The set was solid, full of energy with non-stop singing along and dancing, with a generous mix of both the newer songs from their most recent effort, ‘Intimacy’ and their older, well loved numbers, their brand of electric infused rock songs translating from record into their live incarnations gave them a new life.

Despite the size of the venue, the show was tight and had the energy and intimacy (no pun intended...I swear!) of any smaller venue, which was something that I was highly impressed by, the bands clear ability to create such an electric and fulfilling vibe despite the audience being placed at such a distance from the stage. I have to say, I was impressed and all worried about standing there bored were quickly kicked to the curb, as this band are truly awesome live, this show being a prime example of what they are all about.
