With Anberlin and Bayside being two of my most adored bands, I knew, even before arriving at the venue, that this would be an incredible show.
The atmosphere at Billboards was incredible, right from the very start. One of the great things about alt-rock boys Anberlin, is that they always attract a great crowd; excited, passionate, and sincere fans. In fact, for the whole night, this was my favourite crowd I've ever been a part of at a show. A central mosh that wasn't too rough but was definitely fun, a noticeable lack of 'mosh idiots', and an evident passion in the crowd for all three bands.
First on stage were the largely underrated, but widely adored, Bayside. Blasting onto the stage with the opener from latest album Killing Time, "Already Gone", I'm certain everyone who wasn't already a Bayside fan would have been converted very quickly. The setlist had a perfect blend of tracks from the new album, along with old fan favourites like "Devotion and Desire"; Bayside got the crowd full of energy right away. The following for this band was very clear - their reception from the crowd was almost as huge as that for Anberlin later in the night. Right when I didn't think I could love this band any more, Bayside's closing song was an incredible cover of Weezer's "My Name is Jonas". From the starting riffs of this track, the crowd went crazy, and the awesome sing-a-long made for a brilliant end to Bayside's set, and a brilliant start to the rest of the night.
Next up were The Starting Line, and while I wasn't familiar with this band, the crowd definitely enjoyed them and they played a solid set. Admittedly, I was disappointed that they were billed in the middle of the show, as the following for Bayside was far bigger, and whilst playing very well, The Starting Line certainly weren't as impressive as the other two bands.
After an anxious wait between sets, Anberlin finally blasted on stage to a tremendous crowd roar, with frontman Stephen Christian captivating the crowd with "We Owe This to Ourselves". Anberlin are always incredible live, and this night was no exception. The crowd were passionate and full of excitement as the band followed into "Paperthin Hymn", leading into a few tracks from the new album Dark is the Way, Light is a Place. When Anberlin began the opening riffs for "Godspeed", the crowd went insane, singing back "Hey hey!" in each verse passionately. Closing with favourite "Feel Good Drag", Anberlin, without a doubt, left the crowd wanting more. Returning to stage for an encore of "Readyfuels" and "Never Take Friendship Personal", it was still painful to know the night was over. It was clear to see why this band is so adored by its fans: they play an incredible (no understatement) show, never disappoint, and are one of the most sincere and humble bands I have ever had the pleasure of seeing on stage.
Overall, this was a perfect mix of bands playing to a perfect crowd, and a show I would like to live through over and over again. The only solace to this night ending was Anberlin's promise that they will be back to Australia later this year.
