What can you say about reviewing an AC/DC show that wouldn’t
already be assumed, correctly. Yes, it was loud. Yes, the stage was
impressive as hell. Yes, it was packed to the rafters in Etihad Stadium
(damage to the playing surface as a result apparently inconveniencing
the start of the football season), and there were a heap of people there
who looked as if they had been waiting their whole lives to finally see
this band, or had been waiting years and years to see them again.
Either way, the feeling of anticipation was almost palatable.
When the houselights went down the crowd immediately whipped into a
frenzy, and the ground started to shake as the 3 big screens on the
stage (1 on either side, 1 above) began playing an animated clip of Angus
Young/The Devil powering a runaway train. As the clip finished, a train
was presented breaking through the back of the stage, and with that, the
members of AC/DC took to the stage and broke into, surpisingly enough "Runaway
Train". What followed was an hour or so of pure hard rockin'; most of
the hits were covered, and were delivered with gusto. The members of
the band are noticeably older these days, and clearly look to be a bit
weathered, but that didn’t stop Angus Young flying around the stage,
rolling around, jumping up and down and absolutely wailing on the guitar
through the entire set.
Clearly no expense is spared in putting this show on, there was the
Hell’s Bell hanging over the stage, there was animation and footage played on the 3 huge screens throughout, a 70 foot tall inflatable
woman, cannons, fireworks - you name it. This is a band who pretty much
plays shows on this kind of a grand scale all the time, so it was great
to see a band really work such a big arena so well. Age may have slowed
them down a little, but they still put on one hell of a live show, and I
saw several people with more tattoos than teeth look like they were
close to shedding a tear at times, that should serve to indicate just
how massive AC/DC are, and in a nutshell, their live performance did
their considerable reputation justice.
