Meatworks opens in South Melbourne

Meatworks could soon become the best thing to ever happen in South Melbourne's food scene. Housed in a renovated old 1930’s panel-beating garage, this warehouse turned pleasure palace for carnivores will be opening its doors in four stages across the next few months. Grass-fed meat is the name of the game and with influences from both the East and the West, the brand new eatery will surely not disappoint.

The brainchild of Lindsay Jones-Evans, who started Jones the Grocer and went on to open The Victoria Room in Sydney, Meatworks is a space that appeals to the five senses. It has the bright, atrium feel of an old school refractory canteen by day and a moody, hip meeting place by night. However, it’s Lindsay’s hand built 450kg in-house wood smoker that stands out – a testament to his Industrial Engineering degree.

The menu by Chef Travis Watson takes inspiration from meaty dishes around the globe – smoked, braised and slow-roasted to perfection. Think crusty meat pies cooked in ceramic dishes, smoked meats served on enamelware platters, Asian noodles topped with slow-cooked braised beef and delectable smoked duck pancakes. If you haven’t already guessed, Meatworks specialises in food that is deliciously comforting and designed to satiate the most voracious of appetites.

A roving sweet cart designed from an industrial trolley is sure to satisfy the sweet-tooths, serving up a selection of Middle Eastern treats like Turkish delights, nougats and Persian nut slices. Meanwhile, a specially curated selection of Australian wines, spirits and beers, as well as Meatworks’ own clean skins will help calm the meat-sweats.

“Meatworks offerings are not from any one province, just the best well travelled delicious meat dishes that continually inspire me,” says Lindsay. With such mouth-watering recipes, this is one restaurant opening that certainly has us intrigued.
