Eating with The AU: Grain Bar (Spring Menu) - Four Seasons Hotel (Sydney)

Boasting one of the best locations and largest Whisky collections in the city, Grain Bar should already be on your go-to list for drinks. However, with their new American inspired menu, it’s definitely a top spot for foodies too.

With a strong focus on hearty mains and sharing platters, the spring menu is amazingly versatile. Whether you’re after some bar food to accompany some after work drinks or are in need of a seriously satisfying meal, most needs are most certainly catered for.

Grain’s Head Chef, Jared Reeves has combined his experience of working at some of the top culinary spots in the city and his Kansas City roots to bring us some classic American style dishes with a contemporary twist and the combination is delicious.

My personal favourite, the wagyu brisket sandwich is a great example of this. Served with chedder and horseradish, the meat is wonderfully tender and tasty but what truly makes the dish is the gravy served on the side. Made from the juices that the meat produces when cooked, the gravy puts the dish on an almost ‘comfort food’ level and shows that it doesn’t take itself too seriously. Plus, this is the only time when double dipping is not only acceptable but encouraged.

I also enjoyed Reeves’ take on the classic Reuben by replacing the corned beef with chicken. It was surprisingly different and a slightly lighter version of the New York original.

If you’re heading to Grain with friends, they’ve also got plenty of sharing platters for you to take your pick from. For something light, you can’t go wrong with the burnt bleu cheese and fresh veggies plate which is both colourful and flavourful. For some snacks to accompany your whiskey, I’d recommend either the charcuterie platter or smoky meats plate which both feature a lovely selection of meats to nibble on.

For something completely different, they also have a cheese and Whisky pairing menu. After some very extensive tasting sessions to find the perfect matches, the menu sees a selection of Simon Johnson cheeses partnered with some of Grain’s favourite whiskeys.

If you still have space for dessert choose between a tower of maple bourbon cronuts to share or a delightfully indulgent peanut butter and espresso sandwich, which is definitely just for one as it’s so damn delicious!
