Tasmanian sparkling is an MVP every time NYE comes around, due to the region’s famously cool climate, offering an alternative to French sparkling that is now widely known to be just as good – if not better – for big occasions. Two varietals have remained the brand’s most acclaimed, the classic Premium Cuvée NV, and the Vintage Rosé 2011, both of which dominate their price category year in and year out.

Tasmania’s ideal cool climate has given Australia and the world some sought-after produce, and the grapes used in bottles of Jansz are no exception. The Jansz Tasmania vineyard sits to the northeast of the island within the Pipers River region of the Tamar Valley, where the rich soils are by the Bass Strait area. This helps moderate the temperatures, keeping them up in winter and down in the summer to allow the grapes to develop the big, refined flavour that translates to the premium taste of Jansz.
The wines are then hand-crafted in accordance with the “Méthode Tasmanoise”, a process which mirrors the traditional method used in the Champagne region of France, but is adapted to the rich, cool environment of the Tamar Valley, drawing on the valley’s fruits. The results speak for themselves.
Vintage Rosé 2011 is best served outdoors when the Australian summer is at it’s strongest, as is the case with most bottles of Rosé. Jansz gold medal winning 2011 (London International Wine Challenge 2012) is a consistently vibrant wine with depth in both the floral and fruity nose, which brings figs and apple along with strawberries and sweet toasted pastries, and the long, clean palate of rose water, red fruits, and fresh cream. You may get some Turkish delight and peaches on the long, crispy finish as well.

The Premium Cuvée NV is ubiquitous when it comes to occasions like Christmas and NYE, and for good reason. The bottle floats quality well above it’s price point (around $23.90 per bottle) with a zesty nose of fresh fruit, citrus, and honeysuckle. You’ll get a very well balanced palate of sweeter fruits – think apples and pears – with an elegant finish with fresh acidic notes that are dry and cleansing.
