How are you going Tim? Are you over in Perth at the moment?
Yea I’m good thanks! I’m in Perth at the moment; I just got home last night from Sydney!
How did the show go?
The shows have been great! We’ve done some little bits and pieces in the past couple of weeks, a few little shows for Triple J and some little festivals here and there. But yea, they’ve been fun! We spent last night doing a video for one of the tracks on the album, so that was heaps of fun too.
Oh great! Where are you shooting the video?
Well, we were shooting it in Sydney down some little back-streets. But it’s quite a weird concept really. I mean, I’ve never really explored the back streets of Sydney before, so it was quite interesting to be there. The video is for ‘Come Around’, and I think it’s officially being released on TV and YouTube etc. next week some time.
How did you find playing at Splendour earlier on this year? Was it a fun day?
Yeah, it was amazing! The line-up was incredible so it was great to stick around for the weekend. We started early, I think that we were the first band on, but we just gave it our all and a great turn-out popped up, so we were just like ‘this is amazing man’. We just hung out the whole weekend chilling with some cool bands that we knew from previous festivals and stuff. I’d never been to Splendour before, even just as a punter, so it was really cool just to be there and check out the vibe – it’s a really good vibe.
I think that we definitely dedicated this Splendour to just chilling out and enjoying the weekend you know, because it was a fantastic line-up and it was such a buzz for us to have a weekend to chill. We got an opportunity to check out some of the acts, and so we did. And in terms of doing a festival when it is sort of a ‘one off’ type thing then having to move on to the next location, it’s usually very fast moving when it comes down to the normal ‘festival mood’.
As one of the ‘up and coming’ bands of Australia, what are some of the things you’ve learned about traveling the country?
That’s sort of a hard question. I guess that I dread the airport – that’s probably the hardest part. I guess just being at the airport and always traveling on a plane can get a bit daunting at times because I’m not really a fan of flying.
I guess that another thing is that I’ve learned to not go too hard after every show, because then the next show will end up being pretty hectic. But we usually just chill out and have fun; it’s usually pretty cruisey most of the time. We don’t usually go out a lot, but that just makes it more fun when we do go out [on tour].
You’re playing the One Movement festival this weekend in Perth - which is where you guys originated. How important is the local Perth music scene to you now that you’re more known and flying across the country to play gigs?
Well, a lot of my mates still play in bands in Perth, so I’m always ‘around’ and checking them out. I really enjoy the Perth scene in terms of music, and even though it’s not a huge scene it’s still got some great musicians and some great people within it. I mean, I spend most of my time at home checking out new bands – so I still keep tabs on the Perth scene, very much so.
Looking into the future, how does it feel to be playing on the Good Vibrations tour? I mean, you’ve been invited to play on the whole tour and not just at Good Vibes in Perth!
Yea! Well I mean, last year we played Good Vibes in Perth and the experience was great! It was so much fun, and I’m a big fan of hip-hop so it was great to just chill out and enjoy all the different acts. I think that I’m more excited for next year because it’s such a great line-up and you’ve got a big mix of really good artists. It’s going to be a lot of fun touring the whole loop this time with these guys. It’s going to be a whole lot of fun.
Who are you most looking forward to seeing on the line-up?
Yea, I think Phoenix. I mean, I’ve always been a huge fan of Phoenix but never seen them live. So I’m really going to be pumped for that. It’s a cool line-up, it’s got a great vibe about it – maybe that’s why they call it good Vibes… So yea, should be fun, I’m really excited for it.
You’ve got a few big gigs in between now and Good Vibes, so are you changing the live show as you go along?
Yeah! We’re spending most of our time before the New Year changing the live scene. We’re bringing in additional players and stuff. I mean we’ve got a four piece at the moment but we’re going to make some changes; we’re going to introduce some new instruments like synths and things so it should be a different vibe between us when we’re playing.
We also want to experiment a bit more in terms of interludes and just playing stuff that we love playing as musicians. It should be really good as we get closer to the new year you know, we’re going to make it [their live show] as good as we can to get it all ready for the festivals and the new album when it comes out!
It sounds like you’re growing as a band as you continue to perform live, almost like you’re rehearsing on stage for the next album.
Yea that’s it. I mean, when you go to see a band live you want to feel the vibes. I guess that we want to get to the point where we’re really tight and performing at the level we want to perform at.
I read on your Twitter that you were recently over in New York. Was this visit for band purposes?
Yea, that was when we were recording – we were getting the album mixed in New York so we spent a good couple of weeks over there. It was a really great experience to be over there and see things that we hadn’t seen before. We spent a lot of time out in New York while the album was being mixed, then we’d come back to the studio to have a listen. We checked out a really cool place called MOMA which is the Museum of Modern Art; which was so much fun – I mean that’s practically all we did. In the end we were really happy with the way it was mixed so the whole trip was a big plus.
If you’re a bad flyer, the flight to New York is the longest flight I think you can take!
Yeah! I was prepping for it beforehand, but it turned out to be okay because I slept through most of the flight; I think I was a bit knocked out you know. Late last year we did a few showcases in New York and that was great, but it meant that this time around I knew what to expect in terms of the flight; like how long and what to endure. I actually quite enjoyed the flight because it was a bit comfier than the small airplanes you get in the domestic flights.
I mean we got to play video games and stuff too, so that was good. Jean loves his video games; Jean’s got his little gadgets. Sometimes when we’re at festivals he’ll have his Donkey Kong set up, so we’ll just sit around and a lot of Donkey Kong, or sometimes we’ll be playing table tennis which is what I enjoy more cos it’s a bit more physical you know, I can fit my thirty minutes in each day
Other than Good Vibrations, what can we expect from Tim and Jean in 2011?
Well, definitely that our album will be out next year! But other than that we’ve got lots of shows coming up – but even before those we’ll hopefully be done with a few new videos and some new tracks on the radio. I mean, we’re building up for next year, and I’m hoping that we can get a variety of shows that we can play around the time we release the new album. It’s definitely an exciting time, next year looks like a busy one; so it should be good.
