The Jungle Giants have shared stages with some popular Brisbane local bands such as Last Dinosaurs, Ball Park Music and The Medics and have already wowed crowds after the recent released of their self-titled EP. Alexandra Duguid had a chat with front man Sam Hales about their recent success.
A lot has happened for you guys, in a very short amount of time; how did you manage to get it all together in such a short amount of time?
We had no idea our EP would be recieved in the way it was. We really just recorded it because we wanted to play a gig, so to earn some attention was a great surprise. Since then we have just rehearsed and toured alot, so we can make our live show better. We also have a great team of people working with us, so we are very excited about the future.
The name ‘Jungle Giants’ doesn’t really suggest much to the nature of your music; how’d the name come about?
We origanally played with a bunch of names, but once we started playing together we realised there was lot of crazy energy bouncing between us, so we decided that name fit the bill.
How do you think being from Brisbane has influenced the music you write, if it has at all?
I think it has influenced my writing massively. Most of the bands i see are from Brisbane, and i always go home so inspired after a show. There is an amazing new wave of music in brisbane right now and it's great!
‘Mr Polite’ is insanely catchy; any back-story to it all?
It's basically a realtionship inspired song. The idea behind it is about not caring what other people think, and just enjoying yourself.
How were your first interstate shows? Any particular poignant moments from your recent touring escapades?
They were amazing! We played to some great crowds. In Adelaide people were on eachother shoulders, and alot of people sang along in each city. We also had a wicked opportunity to sing kareoke with The Grates in Sydney, it was a blast.
Looking at your Triple J Unearthed page, it’s hard not to see how much Triple J have endorsed you guys; how does it feel to have so much support from such an important musical institution?
The support has been so great. We are so appreciative of Triple J for giving us a chance. The airplay definitely helps with interstate tours, so our music can reach other people. We love what triple J are doing for Australian music.
On New Year’s Eve you have two shows! How are you planning to hail in your musical New Year?
Definitely with a lot of partying. We are pretty excited about playing the two shows because apparently they are both crazy. We will definitely be letting loose.
What is in store for The Jungle Giants in 2012?
Lots of touring. We have a few exciting things happening at the very start of the year, including recording a new EP. We are too excited to get started.
