Based primarily in Queensland, Ryan Murphy's latest project The Lion and Ryan has been making quite a few splashes in the national live scene of late. We had a chat to the man himself about his latest project...

Firstly, for readers unfamiliar with your music, how would you describe your sound?

Pop with blues and soul connotations

Can you please tell us a little bit about your latest musical adventure: The Lion and Ryan?

it's just looking at my song writing from a different angle I guess, I performed solo so much this year I needed to start sharing the stage again!

What have been your major influences (musical or otherwise)?

I hate to say it but relationships is where I draw from the most- but I promised my bass played the next 5 songs will have nothing to do with girls!

Only two short years after picking up the guitar, you were accepted into the exclusive Queensland Conservatorium’s bachelor of popular music degree - did you find it hard studying music after such a short period, or did it come naturally to you? How crucial do you think completing a music degree has been to your success as a musician?

Yes It was very hard, music is tough like that- you find yourself putting huge effort into writing or just improving and most of the time you get no reward.. I've been lucky enough to have great people around me keeping me motivated but it certainly can be very un-encouraging at times.

If we took a quick peek at your ipod/mp3 player - which songs would come up on the 'most played' list?

Probably Amy Winehouse, John Mayer, James Morrison, and lately ray Charles and Aretha Franklin

If you could collaborate with any other artist, who would it be and why?

Mark Ronson, I love his production! Everything he does sounds like a 60's soul album.. But modern- if that makes sense

You've received some pretty prestigious accolades - including a Gold Coast Music people’s choice award and a finals berth in the APRA development awards - has this critical success driven you to keep pursuing a career in music? Do you think you would still be performing even if you hadn't received this encouragement?

Of cause I would still perform, its great to get praise from time to time but that's not what fuels me, I love sharing my experiences on stage with strangers it's a really great feeling. in 5 years I might still be playing small venues and recording demos in my room, you just have to keep trying to impress yourself I guess and hope more people pay attention

Lastly, what can people expect from one of your live shows?

My live shows are very personal, I love to talk a lot. I don't take myself very seriously in the real word so that's exactly how I try represent myself on stage.
