Levi: You released your first solo album Little Immaculate White Fox late last year, how did the recording process go?

Pearl: I started writing songs with Jim Wilson and Marcus Lake, but it wasn’t until a little while in I started to get more involved. The writing process was played out naturally and organically; it was a fun process.

Levi: How have the live shows been going? How are the crowds reacting to your first album?

Pearl: We just did a month long tour headlining clubs in the US in the spring time, it went great of course. Scott is playing with me, so on top of the people that show up because they have the album already, or they know me from singing with my dad, or singing with Motley Crue, Anthrax fans show up a lot too... They come in and you know they're a bit cynical, they just want to see Scott Ian. But every night, I tell you, after the show every kid that turned up with an Anthrax t-shirt is in line holding a CD and asking for me to sign the CD and saying ‘I didn’t know anything about you’, or, ‘I didn’t expect that I’d like this at all, I thought it would be shit’. I would say it went pretty well. We toured across the country making friends in every city, I can’t complain about the reception; it was all really positive.

Levi: You played a few songs recently on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, how did that go?

Pearl: Brilliant, we did Jimmy Kimmel on January 18th, it was a Monday, the album came out two days after that. The staff there and the crew, Jimmy himself, and everybody were just wonderful, extremely hospitable, accepting and welcoming. Technically, it was great; it was a well oiled machine, they let us do three songs - one song for broadcast, one at the end of the show over the closing credits, and another one we did just for the studio audience which they put up on the website. It was a really wonderful opportunity for us.

Levi: Being from Australia, I’ve got to ask if you have any plans to tour here any time soon?

Pearl: For sure, it’s definitely on our brains. We're looking at that now, it’s just a matter of putting it to work, putting it all together, you know, it takes a lot of money to take a tiny little band from the States all the way to Australia. It’s not impossible, and it’s not out of the question, it might take us a tiny bit of time, but we definitely look forward to it, for sure.

Levi: Just wondering, have you performed in Australia before as a backup singer?

Pearl: Yeah, I have actually, can’t remember what year it was but I was singing with Meat Loaf, my dad... Was it '96, '95? It was the end of that tour, we did the whole world: North America, Europe, Australia, New Zealand, we did the Middle East, Africa, everywhere. We did the good part of a month in Australia, it was great. I love Australia, I can’t wait to go back. Scott goes there every once in a while with Anthrax, I’m so jealous.

Levi: So you didn’t get to come along when Scott played Soundwave at the start of the year?

Pearl: No, I didn’t come, they were only there for a few days and it was like, you know, show, travel, show, travel... I would have been working, and to go on a trip like that it would have been exhausting. You don’t get to really spend the time and appreciate Australia because you’re in vans playing a gig here and a gig there, you know what I mean? So not that time, but we're working on coming back with Pearl.

Levi: Do you plan on doing any more back up singing with Meat Loaf or any other bands?

Pearl: No, I think I took this step to sort of move away from that, I think I paid my dues as a backup singer; I’m not putting it down in anyway, and I love it, but I don’t see myself doing that right now. I plan on trying to move on and up, and do things to benefit my own music.

Levi: Does it feel different being a frontwoman as opposed to a backup singer?

Pearl: Completely, standing in the back, you're part of the machine, you're part of the song that’s recorded, it’s an important job and an important place to be because you’re very much needed. Stepping out from the back and into the front is a huge step: it's totally different… It's hard, it’s not an easy job, you need to know how to maintain and be the focus of the show, and keep the energy going, and feed into the crowd. It’s a whole different world from being a backup singer, I love it, it’s a challenge. I’m pretty happy with what I’ve done so far and how I command my stage right now. I tell you, every time I perform I learn something new about what I wanna say or how I wanna move; it’s a constant learning process, it’s a big job, but I’m happy to take it, I love it.

Levi: You just got back from Europe with Scott, what was the Big Four tour like?

Pearl: Amazing, absolutely amazing! It was history in the making. Those guys have never toured together before and they basically grew up together. They’ve all known eachother since they were like eighteen years old, and they're all still doing it, and they're all still extremely successful. To see Anthrax go out there in a packed stadium... The first show they did was in Warsaw, in Poland, they had over 100 000 people... When you have that many people screaming to ‘Anti-social’, singing every word, and seeing every fist up in the air, it's really, really powerful and really cool to see the four bands backstage, like family. They were all chilling out and hugging eachother, and we're like ‘hey, man’. It’s a really amazing feeling, such a brilliant opportunity for everyone, I think.

Levi: I was just about to ask did all the boys get along…

Pearl: Amazing... The vibe backstage was positive, the energy was happy and everybody was just happy to be there, and to be able to share the experience together. I think everyone has grown up and moved past anything that was getting in between them before, that’s at least what I saw firsthand. I can’t say enough good things about it.

Levi: What is the future of Pearl as a band? Can we expect more albums and tours?

Pearl: Yeah, for sure, we’ve already started writing music for the next album, and we’ve been invited to open for Meat Loaf in the states on August 12th at the Amphitheatre in Los Angles, so we're excited about that. We’re just going to keep going and keep moving, trying to get the music out there to as many people in as many years as possible. It’s a big job 'cause there’s a lot of ears out there, we're going to work our asses off because it’s all we want to do; everyone believes in it and the reception we’ve been getting so far is just 100% positive, it makes me smile. So, just more and more playing, touring and recording.
