The AU review caught up with Zack from Melbourne band Radio Star to find out about tubs full of yellowish liquid, girls from Poland, getting punched in the face and cousins in brothels. Yep, all in a days work for those crazy kids from Radio Star.
Define Radio Star as a band: who are you and what kind of music do you play?
WEPLAYTRASHPOP
How did you start out?
We were young and bored, what else could we do?
What has been the biggest highlight of your career so far?
Getting great haircuts.
You've just done a video for “A Common Tale”; tell us about the production process?
Well right at the end of the clip there is a really quick shot of a large plastic tub full of this yellowish liquid, basically we just drank a lot of that and rolled down a hill for eight hours.
Are you happy with the video? How has it been received?
Yeah, real happy. Its been featured on the Triple J home and hosed website, played on Rage, Channel V, MTV and some girl from Poland left a comment on youtube, so it's all been pretty positive.
Are you guys writing/recording at the moment?
Yeah we are going into the studio next week to do our first EP.
You're currently touring for the single; tell us about your touring experiences? What's been the craziest thing that's ever happened? What's been the biggest drama?
Touring is great fun, it's pretty hard sometimes as you have to spend a lot of time with a few people and there are large gaps of land between most cities around here and we have to drive because we can't fly, the don't let us anymore... The thing about touring is that you sometimes tend to lose your mind when you’re in a strange city for one night only; sometimes you get kicked out of your hotel, sometimes I get punched in the face... by Will. Sometimes our bass player runs into his cousin in Kings Cross, in a brothel.
What can be expected of a radio star live show?
Someone will be drunk, someone will be crazy, something won't work or break halfway through, and it won't matter though, cos it'll be fun.
Are you looking to tour more in the near future? What other plans do you have for the rest of 2011?
Yes. Big plans.
Who do you love right now in the Aussie scene?
Papa Vs Pretty, Last Dinosaurs, John Steel Singers
Tell us about the band on a more personal level:
Who is the funniest and why? Me, I'm hilarious.
Who is the most disorganised and why? Me and my goldfish mind.
Do you all live together? No, we don't live together, thank god, we'd kill each other.
Who has bad habits and what are they? Jake, he borrows money and doesn't give it back.
What are your favourite, can’t do without pieces of equipment? My fringe, my Egg.
Who inspires you? Girls
