the AU interview: Ivan Vizintin of Ghoul (Sydney)

Hey guys, congrats on a great 2010. What did you enjoy most about the year?

Getting signed! We didn't think it was going to happen. We sent out the mini-LP to a bunch of labels and go no response... or we got 'This is too weird, I can't put it out.' It was really depressing, especially because we were out of pocket because of mixing and mastering. We thought that we had created this abomination that no one was going to listen to. Then out of nowhere, Speak N Spell wanted to hear it... and they loved it.

Best and worst shows of the year?

Best show? PVT with Seekae at Manning Bar. Worst show? Oh Ye Denver Birds at Melt Bar. OYDB are amazing, Melt Bar sucks balls.

What was playing Field Day like? Lots of NYE hangovers, one would imagine...

Great. We've never played a bigger stage. There was no one there, but it was still fun to open a festival and then go for a swim in the afternoon.

Onto the new release. Firstly, why a "mini-album"?

It was originally going to be a full length, but there were two or three tracks that were really just a bunch of filler. So we cut the filler out!

Secondly, interesting choice of verb for the title. Why "Dunks"?

For us, it means 'hits' or 'the good ones.' Sorta like the best tracks we wrote between 2009-2010.

Favourite song from Dunks?

Most definitely Ouija. It's one of the simplest structure wise, but has this crazy ending where the drum pattern is cut a little short and the whole thing just opens up.

Who did the artwork? It's really cool, very simplistic.

Our friend Mitchell Cumming. He is an incredible illustrator and we just let him have free reign over the artwork. I really like it, I think it evokes what we were trying to achieve on the record.

What are the plans for the rest of 2011? Any major touring coming up?

We just played our first international supports with Junip, and have our first Melbourne show with Yeasayer!

Finally, as regulars of Sydney's underground live music scene - what are three Sydney acts you think deserve a lot more attention than they've gotten so far?

Holy Balm, Megastick Fanfare and Bearhug.
