Hi, Imogen! How has 2011 treated you so far?
Been a busy wonderful year already with highlights being touring South Africa, writing a film score, writing and releasing a new song called "Lifeline" and I'm now officially somebody's aunt!
The biggest news in relation to you this year has been the announcement of releasing a new song every three months, eventually making an album. What's influenced this decision?
Time (so little of it) and inspiration. I want to manage my personal and music life better and also get more varied in my musical outputs! Film scores, writing for theatre, producing/writing for others. When I do an album all in one go (sometimes a whole year non stop) everything else goes on hold. This way... I'll write and record a song in two weeks every 3 months, when it's relevant to me and I get to enjoy life in the process!
Do you feel that this will be of greater benefit to you as a songwriter in the long term, instead of working on too much music at one time?
Exactly. It's already proven to me it's going to be great with the result of the first song just released. I'm so inspired and already excited about heapsong2!
Could it also be linked to your notoriously gap-filled discography, with seven and four years separating each of your three albums?
Every album is 4 years between (if you include the Frou Frou album). The cycle takes this long when you do it yourself and you tour a lot. When I actually get around to finding the time amongst all the other things that go on to make the music... I'm actually pretty quick!
These will be the largest shows you've performed in Australia. Are you looking forward to returning?
Most definitely. Can't wait! That's why I'm coming back!
You've been added to a massive line-up of the Bluesfest. Which acts from the line-up are you most keen to check out?
I er... haven't checked yet!
Much has been said of the extensive layering and highly intricate production of your music. Is it difficult to convey that in a live context?
I don't try to recreate it sound for sound. It would be impossible without playing to a backing track which I don't do! I have fun interpreting them in another way. People don't want to hear a bad carbon copy of the studio version anyway.
Lastly, you're an advocate of modern technology in order to keep conversation with your fans - particularly your social networking, where you've got something crazy like a million Twitter followers. What has been the most positive thing to come out of this advocacy?
Creative energy, feeling connected to my fans and the world, being able to pull off crazy projects like "Lifeline" (known as #heapsong1 before released) where I wrote, recorded, made the video, did the artwork... all with the help of the fans! I feel so awake it's fabulous!
