We caught up with Endless Boogie just months before they hit the shores of Australia to play Golden Plains Sixx festival to talk about the tour, new material and much more.
You're due to hit the shores of Australia in early March this year, what can expect from an Endless Boogie show?
Oh, I dunno, a one hour one song show, or a 45 minute 6-song show. we never have a set list, and we get bored repeating ourselves (we do enough of that within a song already!) - it's all about getting a solid groove going and hope to take off to where we want to go. We like to be loud, because what you cannot do with skill you'll have to with volume instead. Sometimes we're very 'song'-based, sometimes it feels right to try out something new and see of we can pull it off.
After releasing two full length albums, can you still consider Endless Boogie as an "old man hobby"?
We're very honored that people want us to play shows and record albums, but I think our basic philosophy stands: we like to get together and jam and have a good time amongst ourselves, we love to be able to play in front of people who are into what we do. We're too old to have any illusions about 'careers' or whatever. It's all about making us and other people psyched, however many, however few.
You just started playing at Union Pool every Thursday. Is that a usual hang out for the band?
We play there several times a year. It's a great room and the guy doing the booking (Will) is a great guy who creates great bills and opportunities for local weirdo acts. It really is a nice place to play, very un-wiliamsburg in the way it is run, even if the main bar room (separate from the room where bands play) seems to be a glue trap for young hipsters who have no idea who we are or that we're in the back choogling away to a different kind of people. We usually hang at Max Fish on the lower east side. Our drummer has worked there since it opened in 1989, and the drinks are priced very much to our liking. For pure atmosphere, try Milano's or Jimmy's Corner, two of very few classic New York bars still standing
Your songs are said to be one endless jam of groove. Would you say that this is a style that you will claim as your own personal one?
No, we claim no originality - we've long been obsessed with the parallel world idea that it was Canned Heat who wrote "Sister Ray" - I always wanted to know what that would have sounded like. If it helps you any we've been huge Lobby Loyde fans since back when you could buy Coloured Balls records for under $20. So, quite a long time ago. We don't compare ourselves to any of these giants but wouldn't mind being seen as a band that borrowed a little from the right time and place and created something at least in the neighborhood of unique for the time and place we now find ourselves in. We try and create a good vibe, but a loud and obnoxious good vibe.
Full House Head was released just over a year and a half ago. Can we expect another album from you soon?
Yes, we're probably going to record just before we come to Australia - the album will come out as soon as possible after that, on No Quarter again, natch.
What is your recording process like?
Hmmm, usually have some of the songs prepared before we go in, and record most of it live. then we try some new stuff as well. Some of that will work good enough to release, some of it will disappear into the dustbin of history. I'd say both albums have about 40-50% material that was created while in the studio. It's a pretty relaxing atmosphere. We usually record for two or so days, then two or three days doing vocal and guitar overdubs, mixing...
Do you have any exciting plans for when you come to Australia?
I dunno, is there a Sharpie museum? The holy stone of Billy Thorpe? Can we play with Feedtime or X? Sorry, wrong decade? We really would like to stay on a bit longer and play more shows than planned and in more off the beaten path places. Not that this will happen, but still, an intriguing idea. We are absolutely psyched to come and play in Australia.
What else is in store for 2012?
Besides finishing the album we're hoping to do some more European action, and we'll probably have to do a short US stint after the album is out. Whatever comes our way really.
Any New Years Resolutions?
More jams, more bourbon. No more lies.
