the AU interview: Cub Scouts (Brisbane)

Cub Scouts have burst onto the music scene in 2012, and don't seem to be slowing down anytime soon. Last week they won the Queensland Music Award for 'Pop Song of 2012.' Currently touring with Loon Lake, Cub Scouts are also set to play BIGSOUND in September. The AU caught up with the band and chatted about their whirlwind of a year, as well as which famous R n B group they would love to tour with....

Tahlia: Thanks for chatting with The AU Review! You’ve had an amazing year so far in 2012, can you share with us some of your highlights?

Some highlights would probably be:
1.
Supporting Ball Park Music on their massive national tour
2.
Winning the triple j unearthed competition to play at St Jerome’s Laneway Festival
3.
Embarking on our very first headline tour
4.
Winning the QMAs for Song of the Year and Best Pop Song for our song ‘Do You Hear’
5.
Spending time in the studio with our producer John Castle

Can you share with us what’s in store for the rest of the year for Cub Scouts? Can we expect to be seeing an EP anytime soon?

We’re planning on releasing our debut EP really soon! We’re also hoping to tour again before the end of the year. We’ve got a fair few new songs we’d like to record too, if we find the time!

You’ve been touring pretty relentlessly lately! Any funny tour stories or moments to share with us?

Yeah we’ve spent a large portion of this year out on the road. It seems that the longer we’re away, the less responsible we become. We’ve slept in swags on the side of the highway, eaten ice cream for breakfast multiple times, and stayed out all night just to avoid paying for accommodation. I’m not sure if that’s funny or just depressing haha

If you could sum up your music in a sentence, how would you describe it?

Mostly happy sounding pop music

There seems to be a flurry of great Brisbane bands coming out at the moment and creating some great tunes. What are your thoughts on the Brisbane scene at the moment? Is there something in the water up there?!

A lot of my favourite bands come from Brisbane – Ball Park Music, Last Dinosaurs, Jungle Giants, Millions, Gung Ho and plenty of others. It’s nice to be from the same town as lots of cool bands.

What can we expect from Cub Scouts on this latest tour with Loon Lake?

We’ve only released two of our songs, so attendees can expect lots of new songs! Also a cover of a cool 90s R’n’B pop song.

Congratulations on your nomination for ‘Pop song of 2012’ at the Queensland music awards. How did you feel when you found out ‘Do You Hear’ was nominated

Thank you! I was really surprised when I found out we’d been nominated. We were up against some well-established artists/bands, so it was a huge shock when we won!

If you could do a tour with any band either locally or internationally, who would you pick and why?

Destiny’s Child. ‘Cause it’s Destiny’s Child.
