the AU interview: Cass & Xavier of Chicks Who Love Guns (Sydney)

CWLG

Ahead of their free show this Thursday night in Sydney at the Oxford Art Factory, we chat with Cass and Xavier (pictured centre and second from right, respectively above) of up and coming Sydney rock band

Chicks Who Love Guns

.

For readers unfamiliar with your band - how would you describe your style?

Cass: Chicks Who Love Guns are a five piece band lacking any real chick bits. We play loud and fast, like a Thai

massage with happy ending.

Xavier: Imagine having sex with a donkey… And finding out you loved it.

You've been described as "the musical bastard children of Gallows and the Arctic Monkeys" and have drawn

comparisons with the Dead Kennedy's and Eddie Current Suppression Ring - do you relate to these comparisons

or do you think your sound is completely different?

C: Yep. These are all bands we do indeed like, and I can see little chunks of all of them in our puke, now that you mention it.

X: We listen to all those bands, so there’s got to be something in there. Our sound definitely isn’t worlds apart. That’s pretty nice of whoever said that, I mean, it’s a lovely thing to say about us.

You've all come from various musical backgrounds (playing in different bands, different styles etc) -

do you think different
elements from each of the bands you have played in come together in

Chicks Who Love Guns, or is it something completely different?

C: Sort of. I think this band is pretty different to all our old bands. I think it’s working really well for us, as writers, to have been in other bands though.

X: We probably can’t help but carry on some of those sounds. It’s pretty different though, overall. It isn’t intentionally similar. It’s all good.

You’ve already released an EP,
Vomit On The Dancefloor
. Is the material you’re writing now in the

same style as your previous tunes
or are you experimenting with different styles?

C: You’ll know it is us, but it’s far more advanced. It’s now a bit heavier - there are song(s) about Satan. We are no longer singing about puking, and we don’t really dance these days, we more sit around and summon demons and have mostly been trying to bring
Ol’ Dirty Bastard
back from the dead. It’s some high level voodoo ass shit that is totally octopus.

X: It all sounds like us, but the new songs are more developed in a musical sense. I mean, we’ve played a lot of shows since then, the songs have more experience behind them.

What have been the major influences (musical or otherwise) on the
crafting of your sound?

C: Satan is a big one! Also, dubstep,
Pulled Apart By Horses
are our new favourite band. Also,
Rolo Tomassi
. Also,
Joysticks
breaking up is a huge influence on us, because we’re going to steal all their songs. And, take this as a joke if you want, but I think that our biggest influence is
The Wu
.

X: Just the bands we love. They’re pretty varied for each of us. A lot of our influences just come from things that are amusing or make us laugh.

Please tell us a little about your free show on Thursday night -
What can audiences expect from a Chicks Who Love Guns gig? Why should

people come and see one of your shows?

C: You can expect to laugh, cry, dance and maybe pop a tit.
Halal
are going to get their Kosher on and no money is needed for all this.

X: The show’s gonna be full of radness…
Halal, How Are You?
are playing too, and they’re really cool. Just come because we’re totes all super trendy babes, and come with low expectations, that way everyone’s happy regardless.

Lastly, when can fans expect a full-length release?

C: Hopefully sometime in the near future. Recording a whole album would be heaps of fun. We’ve been writing heaps lately towards a new release, most likely an EP, which we will be putting together really soon.
