the AU interview: Azz Shaw of Lady Strangelove (Adelaide)

Lady Strangelove are one of the big buzz bands of Adelaide’s scene in 2011. The AU review’s Adam Monkhouse caught up with bass player Azz Shaw to talk about the big things on the horizon for the boys over the next year.

Adam Monkhouse: You've recently been in California recording with Sylvia Massy, producer of famous albums like Tool's Undertow. How did that come about?

Azz Shaw: She contacted us a while ago and asked us to come over and record. We jumped at the chance and did everything we could to make it possible.

AM: And what's it like working with Sylvia?

AS: Amazing, she is very encouraging when it comes to pushing different ideas. And very funny.

AM: Was the California trip a life changing experience for the band?

AS: It was a life changing experience for all of us. Firstly, as none of us had been overseas before! But also being encouraged and pushed to explore our sound with Sylvia. We are more inspired and excited than we’ve ever been about writing some really good songs.

AM: How did the recording process go, are you happy with the product?

AS: The recording process was mentally intense, but very rewarding. We are very happy with the four songs we have finished.

AM: And what are the next steps before release?

AS: Finishing the last six songs. Pre-production for a month or so, then go back and record and start touring our first single.

AM: When do you think you'll release it?

AS: Hopefully, we'll release the first single around April. Then the album towards the end of the year.

AM: Do you think you'll move to the USA?

AS: It would be nice to move over there at some stage. Hopefully, if we can get some interest over there with the album, we'd love to at least have a lengthy stay in the next year or so.

AM: What about touring, what are your plans?

AS: Once the album comes out that’s all we plan on doing, anywhere and everywhere. Then once we get enough funds and songs behind us again we'll start recording album number two.

AM: Describe your style of music and who are your influences?

AS: Our music is a psychedelic fusion of all the music we love. We all listen and share a lot of different music, and our tastes change rapidly. Currently I’m listening to Them and Nine Inch Nails, Josh is listening to Flying Lotus, Brenny is listening to Janes Addiction and Fox is listening to John Coltrane.

AM: You guys have been around for a few years, how has your sound changed in that time?

AS: It used to be a lot more scattered and intense all the time, but due to our really short attention spans we are now exploring different avenues in our music. It’s a lot more layered this time around, and more powerful dynamically.

AM: What do you think of the Adelaide scene?

AS: Currently, it’s really great man. There are some really interesting bands playing great shows at the moment like Two Suns, The Amcats, Ride Into The Sun, Like Leaves and The Rules. People need to stop complaining about there being nothing to do in this town and nobody coming here, and go and see this shit.

AM: Who else do you like in the Australian scene at the moment?

AS: Australian bands I’m really enjoying at the moment are PVT, The Mess Hall, Grinderman, Barbarion, Blue King Brown, The Vasco Era, Decoder Ring, Seekae, Redcoats and Buried Feather. I’m also very excited about the next Wolf and Cub album.

AM: If you could create a supergroup, who would be in it?

AS: Liam Howlett from the Prodigy playing keys and samples, Mix Master Mike on the decks, Dan Auerbach from Black Keys, Roots Manuva, Robert Plant and Amber Webber from Black Mountain on Vocals, MCA from Beastie Boys on Bass, Santana's percussion section, and Jimi Hendrix, Isaiah Mitchell from Earthless and Tom Morello on guitar.

AM: Hahahaha, well played, Azz, thanks for talking to us and we look forward to the release of the album.

AS: Cheers.
