the AU interview at the Select Music 7th Birthday Party: Sam Cromack and Jennifer Boyce of Ball Park Music (Brisbane)

Larry Heath caught up with a rather tired Sam Cromack and Jennifer Boyce of Ball Park Music at the Select Music 7th Birthday Party, to talk about touring, recording, their massive 2011 and much more...

So what do Select Music mean to you guys?

Sam: Well they’re our booking agency [laughs]. And they get gigs for us.
Jennifer: And they’re also very nice people... Casey brings me panadol when I have a headache.

Jennifer: They’ve been run off their feet organising this wonderful event for everyone. But they are beautiful people, all of them. We love them very much.

It should be a fun show and you’ve been laying a bit low compared to last year... what a massive year that was.

J: Yes, I think this year is only going to get bigger from here on, but very we’re happy to have a little break at the moment to just chill out for a bit and sleep and get working on our new album, which is pretty fun.

S: Yeah I remember at the end of last year thinking, ‘That was probably the busiest year of my life,’ and I think this year is actually probably close to the top again. If things keep going the way they are anyway... this year’s been really busy.

J: We worked out on the plane how many flights we’ve taken last year.

S: We did two and half laps of the earth last year.

J: Yeah we did enough miles to lap around the earth twice. Paul works that out, he’s weird!

It’s not bad, you’ve made it through. So what does the rest of the year hold for you guys?

S: We’re still working really hard at the moment, with hopes of finishing a second record and putting it out soon. We’re under a lot of pressure to do that, not from anyone else but just from ourselves, we chose to do that. So at the moment we’re just trying to see if we can make that happen, I’m optimistic that we can.

J: I reckon we can do it. It’s just means a lot of work in a short period of time, I think that’s how we work best sometimes, so that should be fine.

S: Yeah, that’s right. The record is the creative part, if we pull that off, a pat on the back for us. Everything after that is like the obligatory touring and stuff, so we’ll probably go on tour again this year.

J: That’s where Select comes in [laughs]. They get to help us out again.

You’ve had a great run with the record. You won the J Award, you were number two on the Aussie albums of the year on our website, just beaten by Gotye!

J: Oh we love that guy!

Yeah it’s actually good to see someone who works hard on their music have a break.

J: Yeah that’s right. Wally’s been working so hard for so long, it’s awesome that he’s getting recognition. Maybe one day we’ll go number one in America.

Next album! Do you have a love duet that maybe you two could release?

J: We’re just going to get Kimbra to do a song with us! No, we’re not very good at that. We’re not very emotional [laughs].

S: We typically don’t do that!

It sounds like it’s going to be an interesting rest of the year for you. I can't wait to hear what music comes out of it all.

S: Yeah we’re excited for the same thing. That’s the best part in my opinion. We’re writing and rehearsing at the moment, I personally can't wait to go to the studio and make some brand new stuff, it should be really fun.

Well looking forward to hearing it. And congratulations on the record, I know it’s been a while, but it’s still on high rotation at our office!

J: Thank you!
