Set to play Parklife in September/October, Sydney DJ/Producer Alison Wonderland caught up with the AU review to chat about the upcoming tour, her album Welcome To Wonderland and more!
You’ve been announced on the Parklife line-up for 2012! And you’ve also played there previously?
Yeah I have! It was 2 years ago in a group with other DJs - it was super fun but I have a feeling this years experience will be slightly more memorable :) so excited to be on the national Parklife tour!
Who are you most looking forward to playing alongside at Parklife?
Definitely Robyn, I love her so much! Oh, and also The Presets! Amazing songwriters.
What has been your highlight gig so far?
I come away after every gig with some sort of highlight - it is so hard to choose... It is like choosing my favourite song - too many!
With your musical background being more indie and classical, how did you get into the DJ scene?
It was definitely not a planned career - I just started DJing without any goal but I genuinely loved it so much that I worked hard to make it my own and challenge myself and I guess everything else happened around me organically.
What have you learnt from each style of music you’ve been involved in?
I think having a lot of different musical backgrounds have helped me put a weird spin on my musical perspective which I am forever grateful for.
Your debut compilation record Welcome To Wonderland was just released in May. How did the idea to create a compilation arise?
When I signed to EMI - they suggested I start with a compilation as an introductory release before I finish my original material. I had a lot of fun making it and I was given so much creative freedom!
How were the tracks chosen? Was it based on artists you’re fond of or did you choose songs based on their potential to be remixed?
I literally just chose songs I love, the hardest part was choosing the final 19.
Has the record been received the way you hoped?
Yes definitely - I am very proud of it
How do you usually go about the recording process of your?
I lock myself in a cave and go a little crazy until I have written something. I sometimes disappear for a few weeks - luckily my friends understand :)
You’ve also got your ‘Road To Splendour’ tour going on through Aus. Where are you most eager to play at and which venues have you got coming up?
Splendour was the first festival that ever booked me so I am always happy to come and play there plus I am so stoked about the return to Byron for SITG!
