We had a chat with Sydney band New Navy about their new single, a possible full length release and some great finds on Triple J Unearthed...
You guys burst on to the scene last year with the ridiculously upbeat and infectious Zimbabwe and Tapioca. How did you guys cope with all the hype surrounding those tracks and your band?
We were totally surprised at the response the ‘Uluwatu’ EP received. Being our first official release we thought it would be a stepping stone towards things like radio play. It definitely exceeded our expectations.
You’ve been pretty quiet the last few months but your new track Breathe premiered on Triple J a couple of weeks back, how has the response been for that so far?
Good so far! We haven’t heard a bad response yet, (but who’d tell us, right?) It’s had a heap of plays on Soundcloud, where it is also a free download, and the bloggers have seemed to take a liking to it.
For those who didn’t know, this is actually a cover of French electronic trio Telepopmusik’s track. Do you know if they’ve heard it yet?
Yeah they have heard it, they put out a tweet with a link to our version saying ‘Australians do it better!’ which is both flattering and untrue. We also had a comment on our Facebook wall from Angela McCluskey (the vocalist on the original version) saying “10/10” which was nice. We didn’t realise at first that it was the same Angela McCluskey.
You’ve had your heads down in the studio recording, is that for another EP or a full-length release?
That’s a good question. It will be a one off single at first, due out in a couple of months, which if all goes to plan, will be featured on our first full length release.
So with a new release impending, will we be seeing an upcoming tour from you guys?
Most Definitely. We love touring, and have severely missed playing shows while in recording mode. Keep an eye out for us over summer, we’ll be on the road once again.
You guys are playing the Big Sound Festival next month, will this be your first live show this year?
Not our first of the year, but definitely our first in a while, we’re really looking forward to it.
Will you be road testing much new material at this show?
Yep! We will be playing the new single live for the first time (yikes) and maybe even our cover of ‘breathe’.
NME took quite a liking to your music last year, how did it feel getting complimented by international press of that calibre?
Great, of course. We were amazed that they had even heard us, let alone want to write about us.
You guys emerged out of Triple J Unearthed, are there any fellow Unearthed acts we should be checking out?
Plenty. Make sure you check out our buddies Rapids and I Know Leopard, they rule. We’re big fans of Emma Louise and Snakadaktal, the RUFUS boys are great too. So many awesome acts.
