the AU interview: Mallrat (Brisbane) talks about her debut single 'Suicide Blonde' and tells us a bit about herself

There is nothing cooler than finding good music that has been Australian made, but when you find a debut single made by a 16 year old that sounds like it's been made by a seasoned professional it's a rare find! We are so excited to introduce you to Brisbane based hip hop/pop artist Mallrat. Her debut single premiered today and was produced by Tigerilla. We had a chat to her about her new single, and got to know a bit about her.

Tell us about your debut single “Suicide Blonde”

So this one is produced by Tigerilla, and its named after the INXS song. It’s about a person close to me who was in the Suicide Blonde music video back in the day. She’s blonde and used to be a model and actress but has struggled with things like addiction, depression, eating disorders and suicide... so it’s sort of a double meaning with that.

How would you describe your sound?

I don’t know, I think I’m really still finding my sound! Lots of different things inspire me- I love A$AP Rocky and I love the Black Eyed Peas and I love thrashy stoner rock.

You’re in year 12! What is it like balancing music and homework?

It’s not too bad, I chose subjects that were going to be the least work for me. I tried to be a bit strategic with that.

Who would you love to collaborate with?

So many people! I want to travel everywhere to meet everyone! I would freaking love to work with Skrillex or Diplo, I love them so much; Flume as well would be awesome because they’re all ridiculous producers.

You also do a bit of production yourself?

Yes! I’m working on an EP with my friend at the moment. I’m producing that for her and that’s a load of fun. I love production.

You’re from Brisbane, what do you think the music scene is like there?

There is so much cool music happening in Brisbane at the moment! Some of my favourites are Violent Soho, Dune Rats, Gill Bates, The Missing, Jungle Giants, Velocirapter, Airling, Jeremy Neale, the Belligerents, Moses Gun Collective and Thelma Plum. I’m sure I’m forgetting people. Only problem is that I’m not 18 yet so I can’t go to that many concerts until I track down a fake ID.

If you could only play one song on repeat what would it be?

Fergilicious by Fergie.

If you could be stranded with one person who would it be?

Probably Fergie.

Lastly, in one sentence convince people to follow your music.
Um focus on following your heart I think. Maybe follow me so when I’m Kanye level you can tell your hipster friends you were there from the start. <3 <3 <3
