In advance of their return to Australia as part of the Creamfields festival, our very own Tyson Wray had the opportunity to chat with Jesse from Canada's infamous electronic act MSTRKRFT. Here's what went down!
Tyson: Alright guys, so you’re obviously massive acts on the dance scene. Both with your own releases and your remixes. You’ve remixed dozens of artists from Justice to Kylie Minogue. But what is the best remix you have heard another artist do of one of your tracks?
JFK: Para One’s remix of Work On You or Laidback Lukes remix of Heartbreaker. Both of them are in my mind, perfect.
Your return to Australia for the Creamfields festival will be your second visit to our shores within 12 months. What keeps you coming back?
Opposite seasons? Vegemite? Bunderburg ginger beer and rum? Yes.
What differences from your shows on the Parklife tour can we expect?
New songs. Longer hair. Mix of what you came to see and what youll be coming to see next time.
Do you have any great stories from your last Australian tour that you can share?
Convincing my manager to eat kangaroo was a big thing for us. I know it sounds boring to you, but we’re talking about someone who eats cheeseburgers plain. Like, dry. I was taking pictures in the restaurant and probably embarassing him. That tour was a lot of fun, just to have so many friends together on a bus every day was an event. Ask tiga to do his australian impersonation. Its incredible.
What would you say has been the most impressive live show you’ve witnessed by another act and for what reasons? Are there any that you’ve drawn inspiration from for your live show?
The first time I saw green velvet play, in the booth standing behind him. At one point, I drooled on myself cause my mouth was just hanging wide open and I hadnt noticed. Al and I looked at each other, and we both had that same face on and I think we both said ‘holy shit’ at the same time too. If it was any more intense, I would have blacked out.
Your Myspace discretely mentions you’re currently working on your third studio release. Tell us what we can expect and what’s going to surprise us?
Its gonna be a surprise. I think in this market it has to be. Dance music is somewhat like pop art in that once something has been done, everyone else will do it shortly afterwards. I think people will like it. Im excited for it.
When you’re not spinning on the decks or going through a bunch of electronic tracks and samples, what other genres and artists do you guys like listening to in your spare time? Any Phil Collins, perhaps?
I listen to everything. I mean that literally. Everything. Lately ive been listening to old country music in my car.
If you could be the masters of any instrument, what would it be?
Piano. Everything else is optional.
And finally, how have you (Jesse) managed to keep your hair so consistent over the past 8 years? Would you ever consider changing it, or is the idea too horrifying to comprehend?
I practically shaved my head 3 years ago, I guess I just didn’t come to australia until it grew back. Now im just trying to see how long it can get before I hate myself.
Ha! Awesome - Thanks a bunch, guys.
Don't miss MSTRKFRT when they play Creamfields next month!
