Getting to Know AU Sessions Performer Rowen

Anticipating her performance at this month’s AU session taking place March 31, the AU review caught up with Rowen who is hot on the heels of a new EP. We talk about learning instruments, musical influences and the future. Further information about the performance below.

How old were you when you started writing your own music?

About 12, but I really started writing solidly in high school.

What was the first instrument you learnt?

I got a guitar for my birthday when I was 7 and was instantly hooked. But there were also the spoons. I learnt how to play the spoons by watching the Topp Twins and I would yodel as well around the house. I was a cool kid, right? … Right?

Tell us a little bit about your style – how did you end up falling onto this particular style?

I grew up listening to Crowded House, Bic Runga, Kasey Chambers, Paul Kelly and Sheryl Crow. A bit of a mix between pop, singer/songwriter and country/folk really. I’ve never really thought about it, but it makes sense doesn’t it!

Who are your influences?

Definitely Beth Hart and KD Lang because of the way they use their voices. You really feel something spark when they sing and it’s so powerful. Neil Finn always inspires me with his seamless melody lines, hooks and clever lyrics. Ella Fitzgerald is another huge influence too, her voice sounds effortless and she is an improvising genius.

What is your latest song/album to promote? Tell us all about it:

I have a live video of “Pushing Daisies” out before an EP release later in the year. This song is about wanting to adventure and explore solo, and not feeling like you want or need to have a partner by your side.

What is your favourite record right now and why?

Lately I’ve been digging through the past for albums I missed when they were released! My friend gave me “Landing On A Hundred” by Cody ChesnuTT and I love it so much! So groovy! Car dancing and singing with the window down is expected when listening to this album. You won’t be able to help yourself, it just happens.

Who is your favourite Australian artist right now and why?

Courtney Barnett. Her lyrics are so interesting. It’s like you get to hear a new thing in a new way every time you listen to her music and I love her guitar hooks!

What can we expect from your live show?

I improvise a lot. If I feel it, I do it. I just play from my heart and see where it takes me.

What are your plans for the year ahead?

My EP is coming out this year! I want to keep playing as many shows as I can and writing new music!
