Getting to know AU Sessions performer Max Marvell (Sydney)

Before he performs at the seventh AU sessions on Tuesday, we caught up with Sydney’s own emerging singer-songwriter Max Marvell. He talks about learning music, his influences, his favourite music and more. Make sure to catch him perform at the upcoming AU sessions accompanied by Elwood Myre! More details below…

How old were you when you started writing your own music?

I was introduced to song writing by Sven Tydeman who taught me guitar at about 14 years of age. My first song was called “I don’t know what to say”.

What was the first instrument you learnt?

The recorder at Primary School of course…closely followed by drums, then guitar because mum thought that was easier on the ears!

Tell us a little bit about your style – how did you end up falling onto this particular style?

I love the raw acoustic sound of great singer songwriters where the guitar and vocals become one.

Who are your influences?

Allen Stone, John Mayer, James Bay, Crowded House, Diesel and so many more…

What is your latest song/album to promote? Tell us all about it:

Ummmmmm a lot in the pipe line. 2016 is going to be a big year with the release of our EP, can’t wait!

What is your favourite record right now and why?

James Bay’s Chaos and the Calm – he is a great story teller.

Who is your favourite Australian artist right now and why?

Boy & Bear, because they approach their music in a way most bands would be too scared to try… but for Boy & Bear, the leap of faith in their music has proven to be a huge success.

What can we expect from your live show?

An audience full of heads bobbing along in time with my music.

What are your plans for the year ahead?

To release our first EP and then tour as MARVELL with my brother Tom Marvell.
