Get to know Perth's Tired Lion ahead of WAM Festival 2014!

The WAM Festival kicks off in Perth today with a great Opening Night party schedule to go off at The Bakery! Ahead of the antics, get to know one of the band’s set to perform, Tired Lion! We get the lowdown on what’s been happening with band from the lovely Sophie Hopes since the AU last caught up with Tired Lion in Singapore!

We last caught up with you on the streets of Singapore – tell us about the rest of your time there. How were your experiences in the region?

It was a wild adventure, we met a load of locals that are now solid fans of the band. We also had the opportunity to meet a whole variety of bands from around the world.

Has it opened up any doors for you in the Asian market?

It is still early days… but we did manage to gain a bunch of Singaporean fans!

Music Matters and WAM have a strong connection, are you planning to check out some of the Singapore artists who’ll be performing in Perth this week?

Our drummer Ethan is a long time fan of The Pinholes, so we’ll definitely be watching them.

You’ve got yourself some WAM nominations! Congrats! What do the nominations mean to you.

We are super stoked to be nominated! We really didn’t expect it at all as there are so many hard working bands floating around the Perth scene. I suppose WAM nominations give West Australian local talent the opportunity to be recognised for their solid efforts throughout the year. It also means party times with our favourite local bands!

What can we expect from your set at the Opening Party on Thursday night.

Well people have said that we are a ‘fresh take on 90’s nostalgia’.. So maybe expect a little bit of that mixed with a really excited bunch of dorks who get to whip their hair around on stage. One thing’s for sure – expect a drunk guitarist… he has the next day off work.

You’ve got a single coming out soon? Tell us about it!

At the time we wrote our new single, everyone had their own life dramas going on.. I remember being in the jam room and feeling a whole lot of ‘tension’ radiating around the band. We started jamming the tune and I suppose this song turned all our neg energy into something pretty special.

What else does the year ahead have in store for you musicially, travelly… and when do you think we might get a new record out of you?

We are halfway through recording our next EP and finish it off at the end of this month with legend Dave Parkin. As far as plans go for next year, we are hoping to release the EP and there has also been whispers of a potential national tour in early 2015.

What’s been your highlight of 2014 so far?

2014 has been a huge year for all of us. There are so many highlights..

To name a few: Travelling to Singapore for a string of shows for Music Matters Live and playing support slots alongside some pretty huge bands throughout the year. One show that really sticks out in particular was down in Bunbury for the Kingswood album tour.. This is where our new love addiction started for Melbourne boys The Sinking Teeth. Oh and nearly forgot, our first national tour was also a load of fun.
