the AU interview: Angelas Dish (Central Coast NSW)

For any readers who aren't familiar with your band, how would you describe the sound Angela's Dish are currently crafting?

Writing for Walk into the Sky, we spent a lot more time crafting the songs than we had on previous releases. Rehearsing and self recording/producing the song demoes in pre-production allowed us to really see the songs for what they were, and in the end a darker more honest sound developed over the course of recording the new album.

With five releases over the period of five years and a hectic touring schedule to coincide, did you feel the need to take a break before launching into writing and recording your latest LP?

We had toured on our prior releases consistently for about 5 years and it did take its toll. We felt like we  needed a short break from touring to regather ourselves and work out what we really wanted from the band and what kind of music we wanted to make. We spent a year writing and rehearsing together, really putting the time in to get the album sounding the way we wanted, and we're better for it. Walk into the Sky is an album we're very proud of. It's where we want to be musically as a band write now.

Was there a particular vision you had for Walk Into The Sky?  Was there a particular meaning or message you were trying to convey?

We really wanted to create an album that was sincere and came from our own influences, we didn't want to create and album of the typical  formulated pop songs that please the record label types. The main thing with this record was that we wanted make an album that had longevity and was something we would always be proud of. I think we achieved that.

Were there any strong influences (musical or otherwise) which directly shaped the new album?

I guess the drive to be better at what we do is our biggest inspiration.

Is there a particular song off "Walk Into The Sky" that you are most proud of? Why?

The opening track "Redemption" became the song that summed the album up. It has everything in it that is Angelas Dish in 2010, and also where want to be musically at this time.

The new album reveals an exciting evolution for your band, with both Michael and Joshua sharing the lead vocal duties for the first time - how did you come to the decision to effectively function with two frontmen? Do you think this alteration has changed your sound significantly?

Very early in our career Mike and Josh would share lead vocals at shows so that dynamic always kind of existed even though Mike has song lead vocals since our EP days. Josh always has sung the harmonies live too, but when we were rehearsing ideas for the songs for the new album, whoever brought the skeleton of the song to rehearsal also sang the song. Later it would be decided what part and melodies would suit which particular singer, but the dynamic of two guys singing lead had always been floating around for us and seemed natural for the lyricist to sing their words.

You've been billed alongside some of Australia's and the world's biggest rock bands (including the likes of Jimmy Eat World, 30 Seconds To Mars, Gyroscope and Anberlin just to name a few) - which band was your favourite to support? Why?

Supporting Jimmy Eat World was an amazing slot to get. We're all big fans of them and to play a sold out "secret" show was an amazing experiences. They were on tour with Green Day at the time and played a sideshow in Sydney that was announced on the morning of the show (it sold out in 20 mins after being announced on radio). They were great guys too. The best part was watching them rehearse their entire set to an empty Metro Theatre with only the four us in the room. We learnt so many lessons that night.

Looking back on your musical career, what would you say has been a highlight?

Having the opportunity to  make music that takes us to so many cities and lets us meet so many new friends.

What can punters expect from a Angela's Dish live show?

Between the last album and now we've learnt to not take things for granted. We learnt that not everyone gets the opportunity to tour like we have  and we want to make the most of the chances we get. In 2010 we're pumped to push ourselves and create shows that impress. We working hard to step everything up a few notches and become a band that can match it with other Australian exports.

Lastly, what are your plans for the next few months? Looks like we'll be seeing you at a few headline shows over the next few weeks, for starters!

Tour! Tour! Tour! That's plan for the next few months. We're heading out on the road to promote this new album far and wide.
