the AU interview: Andy "Falco" Falkous of Future of the Left (Wales)

On the last day of recording their third album The Plot Against Common Sense, Falco from Future Of The Left discussed their upcoming journey to Australia with Larry Heath. The trip was designed to be an album tour, but they fell behind schedule and the record is now set to be released in February 2012.

In the mean time, Australia have been lucky to be the first country to have their new EP Polymers Are Forever available in their hot little hands. It was released on the 11th of November through Remote Control in the lead up to their Australian shows. Listen to the live stream of the new EP as you read about the antics that Falco and the boys and girl of Future Of The Left have been up to.

What have you been up to today?

To be quite honest I haven't done that much today. I went to the dental hygienist- had my teeth cleaned. Organised some mixing of some songs and swore at a man who was littering. He threatened to kill me so I swore at him again. I'm not a huge fan of littering but I've got to be careful because one day I am going to get stabbed to death.

Jack (drummer from band) has a more polite way of dealing with litterers. Actually I tell you what, if you ever want to see a very English man getting pissed off, just push in front of Jack in a cue. Its righteous, it really is! He suddenly becomes Jeremy Irons: “excuse me are you aware of the concept of patience” (putting on an emphasised irritated english accent).

Well I'm glad someone's doing it!

Seriously though, at the end of the day the great action that is the world is made up of small actions. You've got to pay attention to the details. You can't control everything but if you can control your immediate environment, if you can swear at a man in a wife beater, because he can't be assed to put his soft drink in a fuckin' bin. Especially if you get away without getting killed!

Have you had any dodgy run ins around the world doing other shit like that?

There was actually this very funny episode we had, just after Jack had joined Mclusky (their previous band) in Sydney. And again, Jack is a very placid guy, he has no enemies. It's the most kind and unkind thing you can say about him. We were eating food after the show, it was about 2am in the morning and we had had a couple of beers. As you can tell we weren't exactly the most party intensive band in the world. We sat on the curb just eating some food, and there was this homeless guy that Jack was politely talking to. But then the homeless guy, who Jack had given some food to and everything, made the mistake of kicking over Jack's pink lemonade and shit kicked off man. Odd Future ain't got anything on us! There were sentences used... at one stage, the man expressed regret.

Well you're coming back to Australia in a few weeks, you will be getting up to plenty more mayhem I would imagine...

Oh there'll be antics! I can't wait, we've only played five or six shows since we left. That's just the way it works, I think. We come over in our winter to your summer. It's just regretful that we do not have the album ready yet. We have one day left of recording still. Originally the tour was booked in the provision that we would have the album ready. That should be released late February now though. But yeah can't wait to come back.

Pretty much all the cities in Australia are great. Melbourne is always great because it brings the biggest crowd. The reactions are pretty much the same everywhere, and pretty much all Australian cities have been some of the best shows in the world, alongside New York, Seattle and Zagreb (Croatia). I no idea why that is, maybe it's something you put in the water out there.

We won't talk too much about the new album because you are still working on it. We do know that it is called The Plot Against Common Sense, can you give us a little teaser as to what we can expect from the album- and will we be hearing any songs from it when you come down to Australia?

It is longer then previous albums. Travels With Myself was about 33 minutes long. The Plot Against Common Sense is more like 50 minutes long. “Polymers Are Forever” is the new track from the EP which is being released in Australia before anywhere else actually. As much as it is a great song, it doesn't exactly represent the new record. With this record it is very difficult to pick one song which represents the whole thing, to me that is neither a strength nor weakness- it is simply tells the story that it is a little bit challenging. In some ways it is a few different steps in direction but it is still the same band, the same chords, a couple of changes of members... but anybody who is genuinely a fan and likes the old stuff, if they have any trust in us, then believe me we are very very proud of it, and if I may be so bold: it's a really really great record.
