Photo Gallery: Lollapalooza Day One ft. Arctic Monkeys + Bombay Bicycle Club + Lorde - Grant Park, Chicago (01.08.14)

Our very own Perri Cassie is in Chicago for the annual Lollapalooza Festival, and brings us all the action of the first day, featuring Arctic Monkeys, Lorde, CHVRCHES, Bombay Bicycle Club, Temples plus Australia's own Vance Joy and Courtney Barnett - and more!

Festival Review: Lollapalooza (Day One) ft. Bombay Bicycle Club + Arctic Monkeys + Eminem - Grant Park, Chicago (01.08.14)

Walking into Grant Park, it really did hit me how large Lollapalooza is. We got a press release stating there was an expected 100,000 attendees through the gates over the three day event. Usually when you rock up to even the bigger Australian festivals (Soundwave, Falls etc), you get the impression you're in for a big time gradually over the day. Here, it was honestly like a good 40,000 people from all over the country and beyond were just transported and plopped down in the middle of downtown Chicago at 11am.

Live Review: Courtney Barnett - Shuba's Tavern, Chicago (30.07.14)

It feels a bit like a dream now. It wasn't long after I'd dropped my luggage off and had that post-long haul flight shower that I was headed out to see my first Lollapalooza presented show in Chicago. An easy 20 minute subway ride out of downtown is the bar and live music venue, Shuba's Tavern. It's a cosy spot with a large stage, though you wouldn't expect as much to look at the joint from the street. Having hosted the likes of The War on Drugs and Death Cab For Cutie over the years, tonight saw a huge sold out show for Melbourne's Courtney Barnett, no doubt fresh off a flight from Australia herself.

Is this the most affordable festival in the world? Meet the event where Lady Gaga and Billy Joel play for less than $8 a day.

When it comes to festivals in Australia, if it's not a rare free event, it's expensive. Though sold out, Splendour in the Grass this weekend, including camping, was over $450 for the three day (and a bit) event. Not including flights, transport and day-to-day costs, like $8 beers (I can only assume).

Hello Asia! Theatre Review: The Musical Dracula - Seoul Arts Centre, South Korea

Since it's announcement back in May I told myself that I needed to somehow, in anyway, get myself to Seoul to see the Korean production of The Musical Dracula. Dracula has always been one of my favourite musicals, as a brilliant mix of all the drama of The Phantom of the Opera and all the darkness of Jekyll and Hyde. It was then announced that it would be produced by Shin Chun Soo, one of my favourite musical producers, who would be writing new songs for the Korean production. And then it was announced that the lead of Dracula would be shared between Ryn Jeong Han and Kim Junsu. Yep, I had to absolutely see this musical.

Festival Review: T in the Park (Day Three) ft. Arctic Monkeys + Tame Impala - Kinross-Shire, Scotland (13.07.14)

After a rainy day and night, the sun peered through the clouds in Scotland for the third and final day of T in the Park, which would see Arctic Monkeys close the festival's main stage in typically rockin' fashion, while Example, Disclosure and Sven Vath ensured there were ways to end the weekend for everyone. Earlier in the day, performances from Australia's own Tame Impala, Kaiser Chiefs, Australia bound Sam Smith, Metronomy, Jake Bugg and many more proved that the festival, the final ever to be held at the current venue, would be sent off with a bang.

Festival Review: T in the Park (Day One) ft. Biffy Clyro + Pixies - Kinross-Shire, Scotland (11.07.14)

Now in its 21st year, T in the Park sits as the most established music festival in Scotland and alongside Glatsonbury, Leeds and Reading as one of the most well known annual music events in the United Kingdom. Its 2014 event - headlined by the likes of Arctic Monkeys, Calvin Harris, Scottish heroes Biffy Clyro, Pixies, Elbow and many more - marks something as the end of an era for the event. Like many world renowned festivals before it, the time has come for the event to move to a new home. But not before they give the venue - Balado Airfield in Kincross-Shire - where it's been held for 18 years, a proper goodbye.

Le Festival d'été de Québec Review: Phantogram + Electric Youth - Impérial de Québec (07.07.14)

One of the many buzz bands making their Australian debut at this year's Splendour in the Grass festival are New York duo Phantogram, an electronic outfit who made big waves this year with the release of their sophomore album Voices - in fact, we named it among our best albums of 2014 (so far) earlier this week. Before they head down under, however, they are touring North America, and it just so happened that we were in Quebec City at the same time; the band playing as part of the city's Summer Festival, Le Festival d'été de Québec. Naturally, I had to head along and see what all the fuss was about.

Montreal Jazz Festival Review: St Vincent + Groenland - Métropolis (05.07.14)

It wasn't that long ago that Annie Clark - aka St Vincent - was in Australia as part of VIVID Festival, continuing the international celebratory tour for her eponymous fourth solo album. And this week, the run of shows brought her to Quebec in Canada for a special show as part of the Montreal Jazz Festival, supported by local up-and-comers Groenland.
