MORE ABOUT THIS TOUR AND ARTIST:
The almighty King Khan returns to Australia in June with his partner in crime (and grime), BBQ, in tow. Hand picked by Lou Reed and Laurie Anderson to perform at this years VIVID festival in Sydney, The King Khan and BBQ Show will also make one special stop off at The Corner Hotel in Melbourne where they will be joined by Royal Headache and Woollen Kits. This show is selling FAST!
A performance by The King Khan and BBQ Show is an awesomely surreal experience; a stunning music machine, playing incredible original hits that never end. Orgiastic, anarchic, hypnotic and personal. Blow-jobs and blood, pick-ups and puke, dancing and laughing.
King Khan is nearing legendary status for his advanced nuttiness and unpredictability, as well as top-notch showmanship and musicianship. He spins and howls like a freak while belting his guitar like a mad man. Mark Sultan (BBQ) smashes the snare, bass drum and tambourine with his bare feet, while molesting his guitar and singing like a possessed angel. He is often cited as having one of the finest voices in the world. What does it all sound like? It sounds like five men. Really. It is a cross-section of amazing bands, places and energies. It is soul. It is punk. It is psychedelia. It is doo-wop. It is ROCK’N’ROLL. Just ask Jon Spencer, The Black Lips or Bradford Cox of Deerhunter – they have all covered songs by Sultan and Khan, as have many others.
King Khan may have conquered the US with his other band The Shrines and their project with The Black Lips may be catching the imagination of youngsters right now, but it truly was The King Khan and BBQ Show that paved the way through many sold-out shows and tours, much publicity and a league of hardcore fans. In 2009 the duo delivered their first album release for three years, the highly anticipated Invisible Girl. It’s a return to the formula that made them infamous and separated them from everyone else. It is their best album yet.
“...these guys are free and loving it. Punk, doo-wop, fuzzy backwater-honk, foul-mouthed groove and low-fi honesty (BBQ plays guitar, drums and sings all at once!) form a collection that hits the heart hard.” MAG
What can punters expect at a King Khan and BBQ Show show? Tear-jerking love songs, punkers, improvised riot-starters, dance-floor shakers, sing-along stompers, wild rockers – you name it. They always drench the crowd in raw energy, and they’re usually the last ones dancing and drinking at the bar.
