BIO:
Youth Alive Events are all about placing value on young people – showing them that life can be excellent and that despite their current circumstances, there is hope and they have a purpose. It’s also about providing a safe environment where young people can hang out with their friends and have heaps of fun, free from drugs and alcohol.
The Issues:
- One young Australian will take their life every day
- Up to twenty more will make an attempt
- 50% of 16 year olds binge drink or drink at harmful levels
- Our society is faced with a youth culture struggling with:
Poor self esteem
Eating disorders
Drug and Alcohol abuse
Issues with sexuality
Family break down and violence
The Solution:
The team at Youth Alive NSW creates environments that promote self esteem, celebrate youth and inspire young people to live with purpose and invest back into society. Self esteem issues are the poverty of our nation. One young Australian rescued from suicide or self harm has the ability to make a positive impact on thousands throughout the world. The Big Exo Day is the largest drug and alcohol free youth festival of its kind in Australia. It’s an event that has attracted tens of thousands of young people (middle school to university students) over the eight years the event has been running. Throughout the day it will feature world class entertainment including: live international and local music acts, pro skaters, FMX, DJ’s, street dance teams, BMX, wakeboarding, social justice projects, markets, snowboarding, surf shaping, world class speakers, fashion shows, and a massive main stage variety concert to cap the evening.
The Big Exo Day Vision:
CUTTING EDGE PROGRAMS - like events that span the Globe, with hundreds of thousands in attendance, with programs that exceed expectations and where every young person can find something that they love to do! Each zone is at the cutting edge of their sphere and becomes the catalyst for new trends and ground-breaking initiatives. It’s a place where young people can explore their creativity and become all that they were created to be. Finally it’s a place that sets the tone of youth culture.
INFLUENCE - an organization of tremendous influence advising Governments, schools and NGOs on youth issues and becoming the leader in youth culture in Australia and throughout the world.
UNITY - Crossing barriers in youth culture to develop a unity within Youth organizations. Where an ever-increasing number of local youth organizations are supported and encouraged and where tools are provided that will cause substantial growth. Where youth organizations understand the importance of large outreach events, own the vision and are key players in the planning, development and outworking of these events.
EXCELLENCE – a professional organization, operating efficiently and effectively. One that is financially secure and that experiences sustainable growth every year. An organization that establishes a standard of excellence that is second to none and that influences events internationally.
History:
Exo Day started with one student in 1998 who wanted to put on an event at their school to show their fellow students that life is about so much more than the issues that face students across the globe. He called it a school Exo Day, which then consisted of a lunch time BBQ, handed out prizes and giveaways and brought in live entertainment. More schools came on board and by 2001 a combined Exo Day was birthed. Today there are hundreds of schools involved in School Exo Days all pushing and leading up to the climactic event at the Sydney Showgrounds on September 18th, 2010. Twelve years in school and nine years combined as a festival and the rest is history.
