Next in the world of all things that are so [sometimes pronounced “sahhhh”] Melbourne: A vegan pub. Positioned on the corner of Lygon and Elgin Streets in Carlton is a new venue named Green Man’s Arms, coming from hospitality veterans and artists Alison Whyte and Fred Whitlock with a loving dedication to being completely vegan and vegetarian friendly.
The owners have brought on Head Chef David Raziel to put together an Israeli-influenced menu for the gastropub, which also maintains a strong focus on supporting micro-breweries – with many craft brews on tap – and a well-curated list of vegan-friendly wines from local producers. There’s even Kombucha on tap, for fans of the fermented tea drink and designated drivers who may want something a bit more flavoursome than water.
You won’t find any parma or steak on the food menu, replacing those pub staples with pub snacks like house-made falafel, pan-baked Yemeni lahuh bread with a choice of falafel, tahini, pickles and parsley, and fried eggplant with soft egg and Israeli salad. Mains include a grilled veggie salad of beets, red cabbage, onions and almonds on labne and pomegranate dressing with pita bread; house-made cous cous with rich veggie stock and roasted veggies. Desserts offered include hom-made halva ice-cream, and fresh ricotta wrapped in crunchy knafeh pastry with pistachios, pickled grapes and syrup.
“We have one vegan child, one vegetarian and one omnivore. As a family, we hardly ever eat animal meat protein anymore”, said Whitlock. “We just want to create a friendly little place that has food that is full of our crowd, our crew. With a small, beautiful menu full of ethical, seasonal produce cooked with love”.
