God bless the Australian Dollar.
First we had Laneway blow us away with a supremely impressive indie line-up. Bluesfest brought us legend after legend. Soundwave brought a horde of the finest 'rockier' internationals. And now here comes Splendour 2010, with what is easily the most impressive line-up Australia has seen in many years. In fact, placed in context with “what’s hot right now” – it’s probably the most impressive line-up since Alternative Nation back in 1995.
And it’s all in the name of three days we (along with 29,999 others) will (hopefully!) be spending in Byron’s sister city for drug trips, Woodford QLD. We'll also be celebrating the 10th anniversary of the festival that, year after year, has pushed the envelope, becoming the most popular Winter festival in Australia. Yes, it's Splendour in the Grass, a festival that has now set the bar to a new high.
Big Day Out 2011, the ball is in your court.
To celebrate the announcement, we’re counting down the top TWENTY music videos from the impressive lineup, as we gear up for the ticket sales on Thursday, 6th May.
You may need about 20 computers running simultaneously to buy tickets, however. They are going to go faster than you can say .... Although that said, the system will probably crash for the majority of the day, so you'll need to make sure you've hired some workers to hit refresh for say, 10 hours?
*Larry flashes back to 2008...* - Moshtix don't fail me now!
Lisa Mitchell – Coin Laundry
We begin our journey at home, with the latest songstress to capture Australia's heart: Lisa Mitchell. Famously the first Australian Idol contestant to ever appear at Big Day Out, the beautiful singer has been impressing audiences around Australia with her debut LP Wonder. And word got out about reality TV's best kept secret through a little song called Coin Laundry - an adorable video clip. Expect a surprisingly large crowd at her show, regardless of the clashes.
We Are Scientists - The Great Escape
One of the "they're still around!?" bands to hit Splendour, We Are Scientists recently made a splash return at SXSW, so you can rest assured they'll be bringing the goods. One of their early hits was this little number - it's not my favourite song by the band, but it's easily the best video. Directed by The Lonely Island's Akiva Schaffer, I wouldn't say it's as hilarious as his later escapades on boats... but, well... you'll see.
K-OS - 4 3 2 1
It mightn't be as well known as "Sunday Morning", but this recent track by Toronto's K-OS is one of my favourites. If you didn't get the chance to see him at Good Vibrations a few years back, you missed a treat - this Canadian, who will be holding the Hip Hop flag pretty much solo at the festival, is an entertainer through and through, making it look way too easy. Don't miss the chance to catch this (genre bending) internationally respected artist. Expect Beatles covers.
Cloud Control - Gold Canary
The Blue Mountains have produced plenty of musical treats over the years, but none of them have resonated with me quite as much as Cloud Control. Gold Canary is one of the most recent treats they've produced - and not only is it a simple yet catchy song - but so is the video! Hypnotic, simple, and addictive. They're one of my favourite bands in Australia - don't miss them at Splendour 2010! The clashes will be painful, I know, so I'm sure this will be easier said than done...
Hot Chip - Over and Over
While I still don't quite understand why Pitchfork blew chunks over this track the year it came out, calling it the best song of the year, it remains a stand out in the electronic scene. It's not trying to be anything it isn't. It's nerds having fun, through and through. And the video clip is so simple, so much fun, while being shot and edited with precision. I LOVED them at the 2009 Big Day Out, and can't wait to get my dance on once again. Over and Over again, rather? Oh lolz.
