Simon Clark's 7 TRACKS FROM 7 DAYS - October 2010

SIMON%20CLARK

Cutting it a bit close to the wire this month, with only a few days left here is Octobers 7 Tracks for 7 Days. I would like to point out that this is about the 3rd different line-up for the 7 tracks this month; there has been a lot of great music around this month so it’s been pretty hard to choose, though some tracks just couldn’t be left out. Not to mention that thanks to the One Movement Festival, I have been introduced to a whole heap of new bands and artists.

Monday – Broken English – Colin Moore
Colin Moore
is a singer-songwriter from Montreal, Canada; formerly of the punk rock persuasion with band Road Bones, he has now moved into what his bio describes as “bar room folk”. In doing so, he has become part of a trend of punk and alternative musicians heading into the realms of folk music and singer-songwriterdom. "Broken English" is the opening track from his debut album Leaving Home, and is a truly excellent song. It features some outstanding whiskified vocals and a brilliant upbeat guitar vibe not to mention highlighting Moore’s ability as a quality songwriter.

Tuesday – I Can’t Stop Laughing – The Trews

I have already harped on about how amazing I think The Trews are in my One Movement reviews, but you’ll have to forgive me, because I am going to do it again. The Trews hail from Nova Scotia, Canada and have opened for some of the biggest bands in world – The Rolling Stones for example. They are possibly one of the hardest work bands out there, with 4 albums in seven years, with 10 top ten singles and over 800 live shows. "I Can’t Stop Laughing" is a brilliant, upbeat and fun rock song with some excellent guitar riffs and rocking harmonies. It’s a song with no pretentions; it’s just one of those great fun songs which will kick you into a good mood.

Wednesday – Sing Me A Song – JP Hoe

JP Hoe
is the third and final Canadian of this month’s 7 Tracks. Hailing from Winnipeg he is an artist who fits very much into the Singer-Songwriter category. He is a brilliant songwriter, with songs that are packed full of heartfelt meaning and emotion but that don’t come off as clichéd or over the top. "Sing Me A Song" is perhaps such a song, it’s a great ballad, which picks up and drops in speed throughout, making it both - but also wonderfully poignant - all at the same time.

Thursday – Mr Peterson – Perfume Genius

Perfume Genius
is a singer-songwriter from Seattle, and his music is the mostly devastatingly lo-fi and hauntingly beautiful I have heard for quite some time. "Mr Peterson" is a song which is driven primarily by a solemn piano and solitary key tone. The lyrics are seemingly incredibly personal and created as some form of catharsis. The song itself feels and sounds fragile and is certainly breeming with melodic melancholy - but that shouldn’t put you off from listening to what is superficially a beautiful song, reminiscent vocally of Owen Pallet.

Friday – Heartbreaker – Girls
Girls
are back with a new EP, their first major release since the release of their debut album. Hailing from San Francisco, they play a form of indie rock that sparkles with other musical influences. To me, lead singer Christopher Owens has a sound reminiscent of Elvis Costello (though without the righteous anger). Their new song "Heartbreaker", from the forthcoming EP Broken Dreams Club, has a great poppy feel to it; full of great jangling guitars and a solid underlying drum beat. There is a slight sixties influence that comes through, though that could just be the surf rock sound coming through – something which is reinforced when the harmonies kick in. Everything just sounds sun kissed and cheery.

Saturday – Days/This Time Tomorrow – Ray Davies & Mumford and Sons

If you don’t know who Mumford & Sons are, you have clearly been living under the very soundproofed rock for the last year or so; subsequently missing their meteoric rise to indie stardom. I’d also be a tad worried if you didn’t know who Ray Davies is: the old guard, lead singer and co-founder of The Kinks. Now Davies has a new record out next month, which is a album full of classic Kinks songs as duets, featuring a whole range of artists. He has enlisted the help of Mumford & Sons on a medley of Days & This Time Tomorrow, a track which is too good for words to describe. It’s simply a beautiful 3 something minutes of music – which has been stuck in my head for days now.

Sunday – Colours – Grouplove

Grouplove
are the latest signing for Brisbane label, Dew Process. Hailing from Los Angeles, they are described as “the indie rock band you want to know”. They have slowly been making waves across in America, sneaking up the HypeM charts. Their song "Colours', from their debut release, is a great little song, featuring some brilliant vocals and some excellent harmonies, not to mention a great upbeat vibe that makes this a great song for the summer.
