Last Week on Late Night: The Five Best Music Performances on US Late Night TV (28th September - 2nd October 2015)

US late night talk shows are a showcase of all-things celebrity, politics, humor, comedy and music. They are often treated as the final thing we see before we go to sleep. With The Late Show with Stephen Colbert debuting in the same 11:30pm slot opposite Kimmel and Fallon – all shows were keen to pull out the big guns in the hope of attracting/retaining viewers.

Our own talk show fiend Lachlan scours the masses of The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, Jimmy Kimmel Live!, The Late Late Show with James Corden, Late Night with Seth Meyers, Conan and now The Late Show with Stephen Colbert and brings us the list of the top 5 standout music performances from US late night talk shows of last week!

El Vy “Return to the Moon” – Conan (Wednesday)

For those not aware, Conan is the hip, music guy in late night TV - friends with a lot of musicians and always giving exposure to smaller acts, this week: Matt Berninger of The National and Brent Knopf of Ramona Falls have merged and created a freshly strung crooning, pop infused new act “El Vy”. They performed the title track off their debut album which is out November 2nd.

Fidlar “West Coast”- Jimmy Kimmel Live! (Monday)

With “Thanks Jimmy” written on a guitar, Fidlar made their television debut last Monday performing their hit “West Coast” – which was also our Video of the Day back in July. A raucously powerful and fun performance will no doubt attract a wave of new fans from this TV appearance. Their sophomore album Too came out a month ago.

Ed Sheeran “Ain’t No Sunshine” – The Late Show with Stephen Colbert (Thursday)

Appearing with the man himself earlier in the show , Ed Sheeran performed Bill Withers classic song with a little help from Colbert’s house band – Jon Batiste and Stay Human. Sultry and smooth, Sheeran breezed through this tune with alarming ease.

Highly Suspect “Lydia”– Late Night with Seth Meyers (Thursday)

Seth Meyers rarely has music acts (unlike musicologist Conan O’Brien when he helmed the show), so this is first appearance on our list with his presentation of Brooklyn rock group Highly Suspect in their television debut. Their debut album, Mister Asylum was released in July.

Catfish & The Bottlemen “Kathleen” – The Late Late Show with James Corden (Thursday)

Beautifully shot in black and white with pops of bleeding colour, Catfish &The Bottlemen gave a stunningly alluring performance of a track from their 2014 debut album.
