OUTSIDEIN FESTIVAL

Live Review: Big K.R.I.T + Milwaukee Banks + Preacha - Oxford Art Factory (27.09.15)

"A lot of people, when they come to my shows they get a good understanding of how much I believe in my own music...", Big K.R.I.T told me on the phone a few days prior to starting his debut Australian tour. The Mississippi emcee was to headline Outside In festival and also play a few solo shows around the country, and while he let me know what to expect, I still wasn't prepared for just how much energy and passion he brought to the stage. While I unfortunately missed him at Outside In, I made sure to catch him at Oxford Art Factory the following day, where he was given some great support from Aussie duo Milwaukee Banks and local DJ Preacha.

The OutsideIn Festival returned to Sydney on Saturday, filling the Manning bar with a diverse range of local and international artists from electronica to hip hop. Some of the highlights included Sable, Cosmo's Midnight, Devin The Dude, Pender Street Steppers, Africa HiTech and headlining the main stage - Big K.R.I.T. It was an incredible day. Six Artists Not to Miss at OutsideIn Festival in Sydney

OutsideIn Festival returns to Sydney this September 26 with a mass of great performers. With local and international artists from genres ranging from hip-hop to electronica, the festival is a melting pot of this generation's contemporary sound. So for all you music lovers out there, here are six artists you should definitely not miss at OutsideIn this year.

the AU interview: Cosmo's Midnight (Sydney) on the development of their new live show & a new EP sound!

There's definitely going to be a particular excited buzz in the air this weekend, when Sydney twins Cosmo's Midnight take to the stage at this year's Outsidein Festival at Manning House. Having consistently built themselves up as one of the country's cool fresh contenders in a wave of talented electronic and house producers, the music Cosmo's Midnight have thus far released have demonstrated a love for blending R&B and bright electronic influences with some effortlessly dreamy soundscapes.

the AU interview: Devin the Dude (Houston) on his first Australian tour, career, DJ Screw, and more

Rap-a-Lot Records may not have the same profile the great southern rap empire once had, but that certainly hasn't stopped the label's legacy from flowing freely throughout both the underground and commercial hip hop of today. The Houston-based label played an unmistakable role in lifting "Southern Rap" to the point where it has played a highly influential role in not just the hip hop industry, but the contemporary music world in general. From DJ Screw to OutKast, Devin the Dude to DJ Toomp, you can find a lot that borrows from the south these days, even with performers like Miley Cyrus and that confusing EDM perversion of "trap music". It's then reasonable to call these Southern rap figures originators, and few deserve that title as much as the aforementioned Devin the Dude, who is finally making his way out to Australia as of next week for a five-show tour. I caught up with the man often referred to as "raps best kept secret" to find out more what he has in store for us.

CLOSED Win a double pass to boutique music festival OutsideIn

With their biggest line up to date right around the corner, Sydney festival OutsideIn at Sydney University's Manning House will once again be bringing that refreshing mix of hip-hop, soul, electronica, grime, and house for a full day of good times.

Sable, UV Boi and more added to Outsidein Festival line up!

Outsidein has confirmed its latest additions today, making the Sydney festival definitely one to be on your radar if it's not already. Joining the already announced artists including Devin the Dude, Big K.R.I.T, Total Giovanni and more are some great Australian and international performers who are representative of Outsidein's diverse range of musical tastes!

Electronica and grime acts lead the second line up for OutsideIn Festival

Sydney's exclusive boutique festival OutsideIn has already made waves with a hip hop-heavy first lineup announcement, but now it's time for the slightly more electronica-leaning second announcement which comes with the very welcome news that Red Bull Music Academy will once again host a stage at the event.

the AU playlist: 10 songs we cannot wait to hear at OutsideIn 2015

For fans of hip hop and soul, today's first line up announcement for OutsideIn has been some big news. First, we've got neo-soul luminary Bilal heading down with his 8-piece band in tow, and then we've got two southern rap heavyweights from two very different eras, both obsessed with Cadillacs: Devin the Dude from the 90's, and Big K.R.I.T from the now. In addition to this, we've got nice list of acts that span various styles in electronica, techno, and house, most of which have a very loyal fanbase to place Sydney's most innovative boutique festival once again at the front of the pack of music events happening later this year. While half the line-up is still yet to be announced (20 acts coming, to be exact), we thought we'd look at the current list of names and bring you 10 songs we cannot wait to hear live at Manning House on Satuday 26th September.

OutsideIn announces first line-up for 2015

Following the 'save the date' announcement from OutsideIn, the innovative music festival has today revealed their first-round line up, continuing it's eclectic aesthetic and dedication to carefully curated line ups.

Festival Review: Outside In - Manning House, Sydney (29.11.14)

So I think we all now know that Thom Yorke of Radiohead endorsed this festival back in it's inaugural year by showing up on the side of stage. Outside In is much more than that though; while it's fun to use Thom Yorke's name to get people to click on things, it's much more enjoyable watching Astral People turn their festival, now in it's third year, into the wonderland of eclectic music it has become via acts which don't necessarily have a profile as big as Yorke, but are equally innovative when it comes to their music. The style has been set, in that everything from the deepest of deep house, and most left-field of experimental sounds, to the most underground of hip hop, will be on display each year as this unique festival continues to grow.

the AU playlist: The Pharcyde - 10 of the best tracks from the left-field hip hop legends

Back in 1992 when The Pharcyde debuted with the classic Bizarre Ride II The Pharcyde they damn near changed the idea of what westcoast rap is and what it could be. Over 20 years later and the group are still in high demand, still creating mind blowing hip hop, and still rocking stages around the world. They are quite regular visitors to Australia, but The Pharcyde live is something you can't just experience once. Thanks to those fine folk at Astral People, this L.A group are headlining the annual OutsideIn festival as well as playing a small handful of sideshows. In anticipation, we thought it best to dig up some our of favourite tracks from the boundless act.

the AU interview: Wookie (UK) talks OutsideIn, his distaste for "chipmunk" vocals, and more

UK Garage maestro and universally respected musician Wookie will be giving Australia a rare performance at the fast approaching OutsideIn festival, so we thought it best not to waste the opportunity to pick his brain a little bit. Here's our interview with him where he speaks on the upcoming festival, the current landscape of music in the UK and beyond, how he approaches festivals, and more.

Monte Morgan of Client Liaison (Melbourne) talks 80s, cargo pants, Outside In, and more

Melbourne duo Client Liaison have quickly become live favourites in Australia, with their pitch perfect throwback to 80s swagger basically built in to their look, their sound, and their live show. But this duo are much more than just a pair of revivalists trying to bring a bygone era back into style, Harvey Miller and Monte Morgan are deadly serious about their art and the various modes of expression they like the play around with. Ahead of their appearance at Outside In Festival at the end of this month we caught up with Monte to chat about their recently released debut EP, crowd reactions, cargo pants, Outside In, and more.

the AU interview: George Nicholas of Seekae (Sydney) speaks on OutsideIn, introducing vocals to their work, and more.

Their debut album has often been cited as a masterpiece by dance music aficionados in Australian and around the world, with Seekae steady building up a huge cult following throughout their career. Not a group to slow down, the trio boosted their profile by signing to forward-thinking label Future Classic at the start of this year and released their third record, The Worry, with a focus on vocals for the first time in their career. With the huge leap forward for a band that was known only for their compelling instrumental tracks, Seekae have know been adapting to performing with a new approach. The hometown trio are one of the biggest draw cards at Sydney boutique festival OutsideIn so ahead of the hotly anticipated festival we caught up with Seekae's George Nicholas for a little chat about their busy international touring schedule and how refined their live show will be once OutsideIn comes around.
