Live Review: Regurgitator - The Zoo (18.12.11)

Sunday nights can be difficult, especially this time of year. Before the ‘Gurge took to the stage at around 10.30pm the crowd were looking pretty lethargic and maybe even a bit it’s-past-my-bedtime grumpy. But with one song, Regurgitator changed all that and whipped the crowd into an all singing, all dancing frenzy!

These guys have such longevity and enduring popularity, and with their amazing back catalogue it’s not hard to see why. Easily one of Brisbane’s best exports, Quan and Ben let us know repeatedly that “it’s great to be home”.

Banging through ‘Blood and Spunk’, ‘My Friend Robot’, ‘I Sucked a lot of Cock to Get Where I am’, ‘I will Lick Your Arsehole’, ‘Polyester Girl’, ‘Bong in my Eye’, ‘The Drop’, ‘Fat Cop’, ‘Nudist’ and ‘Kung Fu Sing’ (amongst others) before breaking for encore. It was an onslaught of high energy hits that had my cheeks aching from my ear to ear grin and my other cheeks aching from all the uncontrollable dancing.

It’s been at least a year since I’ve seen any decent moshing or head banging but it’s damn near impossible not to pogo when hit with ‘The Song Formerly Known As’. The crowd were buoyed by the enthusiasm of the band and readily forgot fast approach of Monday morning.

There may still be a few Aussies out there who have never witnessed a ‘Gurge set and if you’re one of them I urge you to grab a ticket to any of their upcoming dates. These guys are a portable party, even on a Sunday night.
