It’s been a while since I’ve seen Last Dinosaurs; well over a year, in fact. It’s taken that amount of time to get the ungodly catchy “Honolulu” out of my head, but after listening to a very tight and fantastic sounding 45 minute set. There are a few new cuts that are from a forthcoming album, and they sound promising; Last Dinosaurs really seem to be coming out of their shell and moving forward musically. While the indie as fuck, Triple J friendly bangers from debut EP Back From The Dead still sound amazing, while the heavier and progressive cuts from the yet to be released album certainly surprise quite a few in the crowd. It sounds like it’s going to be massive; I can’t wait for it!
I honestly think that it’s impossible for The Grates to turn in a bad show. Each show has been a separate setlist (and that’s over three times in six months; a secret show at Ric’s Bar, and the first of the Secret Rituals tour at The Hi Fi). Even though tonight’s show is The Grates performing as a three piece, the songs come across as powerful and, well, fun as ever. Opening with “Science Is Golden”, “Change” and “19-20-20”, lead singer Patience Hodgson just doesn’t stay still. Bouncing around from left to right, high fiving anyone in the front three rows she can reach, jumping off of foldbacks; it’s consistently 110% from her. Guitarist John Patterson is no slouch either, despite being hindered by an instrument. While the set focusses on a few extra Secret Rituals songs, the encore/closer of “Trampoline” and “Aw Yeah” means that patrons leave the Tivoli super hot, super sweaty; suitable after a night of super fun.
