Hello Asia! K-Pop Awards 2013

The Hello Asia! team has looked back over the the world of K-Pop in 2013 and have come up with their choices in the 2nd annual Hello Asia! K-Pop Awards. With over 60 new acts debuting in 2013 and almost all major idols releasing comebacks, 2013 proved to be a very hard year to decide on our individual category award winners. Out of every category there were multiple artists who could have taken out the awards. But there can be only one. Congratulations to the winners!

Best Male Group Video
Dream Girl - SHINee

SHINee - the best male dancers in K-Pop had their highly anticipated comeback in 2013 with the album Dream Girl: The Misconceptions Of You and boy was there alot of hype surrounding this song. SHINee shows us they are still the kings of the choreographed dance in K-Pop.

Best Female Group Video
I Got A Boy - Girls Generation

Released on New Years Day on 2013 - a risky move for anyone other than SM Entertainment. Girls Generation pulls off a colourful and fast moving music video concept with plenty of drama scenes thrown in. The question we ask is: can one guy be that lucky dating all nine members of SNSD??

Best Male Solo Video
Mine - Jaejoong

First of our controversial choices. This dark, very dark music video from member of JYJ, Jaejoong blends rock elements to produce a very emo like video clip. And girls be honest with me - you enjoyed Jaejoong been chained up...

Best Female Solo Video
The Red Shoes - IU

The "nation's little sister" IU is all grown up in her 2013 comeback The Red Shoes. As with previous IU music videos, this one is very cinematic in feel and concept. Which shoe will IU choose? The pink or the red?

Best Male Solo
XIA Junsu

The amazing Sydney concert in 2013 aside, XIA Junsu had a great year with his track Incredible. We fell in love with his concert performance and his musical December.

Best Female Solo
Lee Hi

The top rookie from 2012 is now a legitimate idol in our eyes. With vocals that belies her age, we see a very bright and long career for Lee Hi.

Best Male Group
VIXX

The second of our controversial decisions. The boys from VIXX virtually exploded on the scene in 2013 to steal the award from more established acts. This six member group released the track Hyde which blew the Hello Asia! team away with their amazing vocals and choreography. We hope to see them in Australia one day!

Best Female Group
Crayon Pop

The helmet fairies of Crayon Pop had on their hands one of the most catchy tracks in 2013 with Bar Bar Bar which incorporated their version of a piston dance. With a world-wide promotion schedule and cuteness overload it will be interesting to see they can carry over their 2013 success to 2014.

Best Breakthrough (Debut) – Male
Heaven’s Door - Eric Nam

Eric Nam was one of our favourite rookies of 2013. Eric is really one to watch in 2014. We loved his debut album Cloud 9 and the single Heaven's Door. Eric is inviting us to heaven in this music video. If the scenery is any indication we're there with you Eric!

Best Breakthrough (Debut) – Female
All Right - Lim Kim (Kim Ye Rim)

The distinct breathy voice of Lim Kim (Kim Ye Rim) showed why she was involved as a showcase artist at MU:CON. A natural on stage and on screen as an actress, we see a very bright future for this Mystic89 managed artist.

Best Breakthrough (Debut) – Male Group
N.O - BTS/Bangtan Boys

This seven member hip hop group was nominated for every rookie award on all the major music shows in South Korea. Its easy to see why; great beats and rap with easy on the eye looks can see why they are the upcoming stars of Korean hip hop.

Best Breakthrough (Debut) – Female Group
Bad Girl - Ladies Code

Out of all the rookie girl groups, Ladies Code are the most complete and talented of all. There is talent there in their singing and choreography but the question is can they go over the second year hump with a comeback and promotion that pushes them up the K-Pop pecking order? With what we've seen so far this five member group has the talent to get there.

Group of the Year
EXO

No doubt with the Group of the Year Award. EXO has dominated the K-Pop scene this year with their album XOXO and the two singles Wolf and Growl. The sub units EXO-M and EXO-K promoted at their representative markets of China and Korea respectively. This juggernaut of a group will continue to rule the charts and the hearts and minds of their highly devoted fan base.

Artist of the Year
G-Dragon

G-Dragon is our undisputed K-Pop Artist of the Year for 2013. His album Coup D'Etat were released in two parts and featured artists such as Missy Elliott, Diplo, Baauer, Boys Noize and Sky Ferreira. The album sold over 300,000 copies in pre sale and held the number one spot on the Geon charts and several other K-Pop charts for weeks. Numerous singles from the albums also held high spots on the singles charts.

Song of the Year
Coup D'Etat - G-Dragon

The Song of the Year Award were a really easy decision. G-Dragon's Coup D'Etat came through with an amazing clip which we could spend hours talking about the themes its trying to convey. Modern electro stylings with the charisma of G-Dragon. Its simply an irresistible combination and it deserves our Song of the Year Award!
