World-first exhibition "Degas: A New Vision" to open in June 2016 at the National Gallery of Victoria

In June 2016 a world-first exhibition will make its way to The National Gallery of Victoria for the thirteenth annual Melbourne Winter Masterpieces. Degas: A New Vision will showcase over 200 works of one of the world’s most loved artists in all of his disciplines, including painting, sculpture, drawing, printmaking and photography.

Tony Ellwood Director of the NGV says this much-loved fixture of the NGV’s annual calendar is an amazing opportunity for all to see.

“Degas: A New Vision will provide audiences with a rare experience to truly be immersed in the creativity and originality of his art, giving visitors a deeper and richer understanding of his brilliance,” he said.

The NGV and the Houston Museum of Fine Art will both stage this major retrospective, as the works are curated from more than 40 institutions around the globe, making it the most significant exhibition in terms of Degas’s work.

The Hon Gavin Jennings Special Minister of State says this artistic collaboration will show that the NGV remains a cultural institution of great international renown, and that having collaborations like this time and time again, will demonstrate that.

“In the winter of 2016, we will show that ability to bring a collaboration to fruition and to immerse our citizens and those who come to Victoria with a very rich experience.

“All of us should celebrate where we see great intellectual rigour, artistic endeavour, cultural appreciation and values of freedom expressed through art and our community’s connection to art,” he said.

Over the years, the Melbourne Winter Masterpieces has had over 5 million visitors, with 10% of those coming from outside Victoria.

Degas: A New Vision will indeed make you gasp as yet again, the NGV brings forth a world-class cultural opportunity that Melburnians should be very, very proud of.

The exhibition will run from 24 June to 18 September 2016 with tickets on sale now from http://ngv.vic.gov.au.
